2. Laura Mulvey
-Laura Mulvey is a feminist film theorist that worked in the 70’s.
-She argued that one of the pleasures of cinema is a voyeuristic gaze directed at other
people, this is called ‘Scopophilia.’
-Traditional ideas of film suggest there is a ‘Male Gaze’ in which the
camera adopts the male audiences point of view, for an assured male
audience.
-The ‘Male Gaze’ highlights the exploitation of women and solely
focuses on their appearance, giving pleasure to the viewer and
making women seem nothing more than their looks. She simply
Explains that women are presented to provide visual pleasure for
men.
3. Representation in the 21st century
- In the 21st century many different industries have the attitude that ‘sex sells.’ This is
shown by many female artists turning to more sexualised videos to gain attention such
as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking ball’ music video and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Anaconda.’
- This dehumanising modern-day attitude is also demonstrated in other media outlets
such as magazines. As shown the 2016 edition of the popular magazine VOGUE features
supermodel Kendell Jenner revealing part of her
chest area, whereas the 1999 cover shows
Julia Roberts as ‘The girl next door.’
- Representation of women in the 21st century can
be viewed as very oppressive as they can simply be
shown as nothing more than sex symbols.
