Jacek 2 prototypes
1. Prototypes of 2 ideas how to improve university courses
(The improved courses would be very practical, engaging, efficient
and should give students better preparation for the current job market)
Problem statement
In order to provide excellent education for students, our University needs very practical courses enhanced by
teaching procedures that are engaging and efficient. Right now, large majority of provided courses at the
University are very theoretical, conducted in a very stiff, old fashioned manner and without any relevance to
the needs of the real job market. This situation results in a high unemployment rate of our graduates, low
confidence and generally jeopardize their career as a whole. If the University continues to teach in a current
way, students will start to choose other universities with more flexible and “hands on” approach to courses
giving them much better preparation for the current job market.
The most disruptive idea
A “try it scheme”. When we buy a car we are able to drive it for an hour or so. In this way we roughly
know what car we buy for next few years. When students start studies they just start them, having
little knowledge what is really going on. Choosing the right studies is extremely important, because this
decision shapes the rest of somebody’s life. Students should be allowed to try studies out before
starting them for real (e.g for one semester or so). This process would allowed young people to start
THE studies they really like. When students really like the subject they learn their engagement,
creativity and dedication is very high. Then both sides of the process (teachers and students) are very
effective.
My favourite idea
Courses should be focused on taking students into the field. Lectures (and other classes) should take
place in different locations (relevant to the topic of the lecture). Students would only get GPS
coordinates of the location or even better: directions how to get there (or to the place where they
would find more directions). Smartphone apps could be harnessed for this task (it would enable QR
codes, e-walls, google maps and similar technologies to be used). Then the ranking of the most
interesting and engaging locations of the classes would be available on the course website (voting
enabled).
The prototypes have the form of posters/flyers. The aim of these kind of prototypes is to test how students and future
students are interested in taking such non-convectional courses. Assessing the interest of the target market in the new
solution is crucial for developing it further and arranging serious investment.
Both proposed solutions were tested on a group of 50 new students, who just started their courses. The test had a form
of a questionnaire. After the first poster/flyer, the relevant questionnaire with the results is presented. After the second
poster/flyer, the relevant questionnaire with the results is presented.
