don't freak out, most of this is just the outline he gave us, i just gave short little answers to it and i didn't give answers to some like where we have to check each source to make sure the quoting and paraphrasing is right.

Group research rough outline
1. I. Introduction
a. What was the topic of the paper? – analyzing adult content in cartoons that aired on major
cartoon networks.
b. What was the research question(s) or hypothesis/hypotheses? Was is clearly stated? – What
adult content is most prevalent in children’s cartoons on three major cartoon networks: Cartoon
Network, Nickelodeon, and The Disney Channel? – yes, clearly stated in the section: Research
Questions
c. Why did the researchers think this was an important area of study? Did you buy their
argument? - “This study was important because it examines the themes of adult or mature
content are viewed by children in current cartoons. yes
II. Mechanics
a. Was there a title page, abstract, and APA references? - yes, yes and yes
b. Were there any appendices? Did they help clarify the content of the paper? yes and yes
c. Did the paper follow APA guidelines? – as far as I can tell (recheck this)
d. Where there errors in spelling, grammar, etc.? How did they affect your overall impression of
the paper? – yes, there were a few grammar problems which made me think the authors didn’t
edit the paper enough.
III. Review of the Literature
a. Were there at least 5 articles included in the lit. review? – yes
b. Were the quotes and paraphrases accurate? (need to look up each article..) pg. 4, quote by
luther and legg, “young children… spend more than 22 hours a day watching television
programs…”
c. Do you believe that the researchers adequately answered the question, “What previous
research has been done on this topic?” – yes?
IV. Methods
a. How did they conduct their research (what method did they use)? Did they follow the
appropriate protocols in using this method? …
b. Was this a qualitative or quantitative study? – quantitative
c. Who or what was studied? Was this an appropriate sample? – three cartoons from three
different cartoon networks each rated TV Y, TV Y7, or TV Y7 FV. this sample is not inclusive of all
cartoon networks and only one episode from each show was studied which presents limited
information to draw conclusions from.
d. How many were studied? Was this a sufficient sample? ^^^
e. Was the privacy of participants adequately protected? N/A
V. Results
a. What data was generated through this study? Was it clearly explained? – data shown in table,
pretty clear
b. How was this data presented? Table and three appendices. the table was clear although
appendices b and c contained a lot of information that was hard to digest all at once.
VI. Discussion
a. What did the researchers learn (what was the answer to their question/hypothesis)? – adult
content was found in one form or another in all cartoons (which doesn’t make sense since none
was found in dora). mickey mouse and dora had the least amount of mature content, while teen
titans had the most (not true since the proud family had the most). violence, acts of offensive or
disruptive behavior, sexual behavior and stereotyping had a high number of instances.
2. b. What further research do the researchers feel needs to be done? Did you notice other areas
that should be covered? – more cartoons and more episodes of each cartoon. how children’s
behavior is effected (affected?) by this content. Why is adult content present in cartoons?
c. What was the theoretical framework of the study? How was theory used in this study? Do you
buy the premise of theory(ies)? – still have no clue what theoretical framework is.. Theory was
used in the review of literature when they talked about Bandura’s Social Learning Theory as it
relates to children’s television watching habits. yes, I buy the premise of theories because…
VII. Analysis
a. What were the primary strengths of this research? – lots of background research on the topic
which creates a solid form of pre-researched knowledge on the subject. Good discussion of the
results with theories of why the results were the way they were and what the results might
mean in regards to children’s behavior.
b. What were the primary weaknesses of this research? – not a good sample of television shows.
the sample size is way too small to give accurate results and to come to any stable conclusions.
c. If you were peer-reviewing this study, would you recommend it for publication? – idk.. no? I’d
have them redo the research with more samples.. I really don’t know though..
