Start By:
a. Separate the retarder from the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Torque Converter - Disassemble" for the procedure to separate the torque converter and
retarder.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

1. Remove retaining ring (20).

2. Remove plate (21) and hub (22) from the inside diameter of hub (4).
3. Remove friction discs (23) and steel plates (24).
4. Remove the following components from the inside bore of the hub: race (25), disc (26) and
race (27).

5. Use Tooling (D) to remove retaining ring (19) from hub (4).
6. Remove Tooling (C) from the transmission retarder. Turn over the transmission retarder.
7. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (18) from hub (4). Remove retaining ring
(17) from the bearing.
8. Remove two allen head screws (16) in order to separate retarder stator (14) and retarder
housing (9).
9. Remove seal (15) from retarder stator (14).

10. Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing (13) from hub (4).
11. Once the bearing is removed, remove O-ring (12) (not shown).
12. Remove bolts (11) that secure rotor (10) to hub (4).
13. Remove rotor (10) and the hub (4).

14. Remove housing (9) from hub assembly (4).
15. Remove seal (8) from the seal groove of hub (4). Turn over hub (4).
16. Compress plate (6) and the disc spring in order to remove retaining ring (7). Use Tooling
(A) in order to remove the retaining ring.

17. Remove plate (6).
18. Remove disc springs (5) from the hub (4).
19. Remove piston (2) from hub (4).

20. Remove inner seal (1) and outer seal (3) from piston (2).

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Note: Prior to assembly, all threads that require sealant must be cleaned with a tap.
Note: O-ring seals, gaskets, and seals should always be replaced. A used O-ring seal may not have
the same sealing properties as a new O-ring seal. Use Tooling (E) during the assembly procedure.
Note: Apply a light film of transmission oil to all components before assembly.
1. Install inner seal (1) and outer seal (3) into the seal grooves of piston (2).

Typical Example
2. Size inner seal (1) and outer seal (3) by holding a round object against the seal. Rotate
piston (2) until the seal is flush with the outer diameter of the seal groove. Install the outer
seal with the lip of the seal in the same direction as the inner seal.
Note: Lubricate the seals with the lubricant that is being sealed prior to the installation of
the piston assembly. Take care not to damage the seals.
3. Install piston (2) into hub (4).
4. Install disc springs (5) into the hub (4).
Note: The large diameter of the first disc spring is aligned with the piston. Alternate the
following four disc springs.

5. Place plate (6) in position on disc springs (5).
6. Compress plate (6) and disc springs (5) in order to install retaining ring (7). Use Tooling (A)
to install the retaining ring.
7. Turn over hub (4) and install seal (8) into the seal groove of hub (4).

Note: Size the seal by holding a round object against the seal. Rotate the round object
around the seal until the seal is flush with the outer diameter of the seal groove.
Note: Lubricate the seal with the lubricant that is being sealed prior to the installation of the
retarder housing.
8. Install retarder housing (9) onto hub (4).
9. Place rotor (10) in position on hub (4). The bolt holes in the rotor must be aligned with the
bolt holes in the hub.
10. Install bolts (11) that secure the rotor to the hub. Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of
28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).

11. Use Tooling (E) in order to lubricate O-ring seal (12) (not shown) and the groove. Install O-
ring seal (12).
12. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press in order to install bearing (13) on hub (4).
13. Install seal (15) in the seal groove of retarder stator (14).
Note: Size the seal by holding a round object against the seal. Rotate the round object
around the seal until the seal is flush with the outer diameter of the seal groove.

14. Place retarder stator (14) in position on retarder housing (9) (not shown).
15. Install allen head screws (16) in order to secure the retarder stator in position. Tighten
screws (16) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).
16. Install retaining ring (17) in the ring groove of the bearing. Use Tooling (A) in order to
install retaining ring (18) on hub (4).
17. Turn over the transmission retarder. Install Tooling (C) on the transmission retarder.
18. Use Tooling (D) in order to install retaining ring (19) in the inside diameter of hub (4).
19. Install the following components inside the bore of the hub: race (25), disc (26) and race
(27).

Note: The friction discs and the steel plates are alternated during installation.
20. Install steel plate (24) and friction disc (23).
21. Install hub (22) and plate (21) in the inside diameter of hub (4).
22. Install retaining ring (20).

a. Connect the retarder to the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque
Converter - Assemble" for the procedure to connect the retarder to the torque converter.

A. Separate the torque converter housing from the planetary transmission. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter Housing - Remove".
Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.
When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear
of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a
