A crawl space installed under the house can make the home colder in the
winter than a house built on a concrete slab. Mold and mildew are the
common problems in acrawl space, so you need to guard your homeagainst
that as well. In order to keep the floors warmer and prevent mold and
mildew from growing in thecrawl space, requiresinstallation of crawl space
insulation. The insulation seals out drafts and prevents warm air from
escaping out through the space. It is an efficient way to deal with the part of
thehousethat isproneto dampness.
The insulation materials that are required for installing a crawl space range
from huge fiber materials like cellulose fiberglass, slag wool and natural
fibers to rigid foam boards to thin foils. Huge materials withstand
conductive and convective flow of heat in a building cavity. Rigid foam
boards trap air or any other gas to oppose conductive heat flow. Highly
reflective foils reflect high temperature far from living spaces, making them
especially helpful in cooling weather. Other common insulation materials
are:
Fiberglass : It is a standout among the pervasive insulation materials made
of fine glass fibers. It is available as duct insulation and rigid boards and is
generally used for two types of insulation: loose-fill and blanket. The
medium and high-density fiberglass batt insulation products have greater R-
values as compared to other standard batt products. And, the denser
productsmainly insulatetheregionswith restricted cavity space.
Mineral wool insulation materials : The “mineral wool” consists of two
different types of insulation material, i.e., slag wool and rock wool. It has
about 75% of post-industrial reused materials and is commonly available as
loose-fill and blanket insulation. This product doesn't require extra
chemicalsto makeit firesafeand it fits stand wall cavitiestighter and isless
inclined to air convection thermal lossesthan other batt insulation products.
Mineral Wool Roll
Polystyrene insulation materials : It is a type of colorless and
transparent thermoplastic that are essential for making foam board or bead
board insulation, concrete block insulation and loose-fill insulation. There
are various polystyrene materials, out of which extruded polystyrene is
commonly used as foam board insulation. It is often used as the insulation
for insulating concreteformsand structural insulating panels.
Polystyrene
Polyisocyanurate/Polysio insulation materials : It is a thermosetting
type of plastic, closed-cell foam that has a low-conductivity,
hydrochlorofluorocarbon-free gas in its cells. These types of insulation are
usually available as a sprayed foam, liquid and rigid foam board which can
also be turned into laminated insulation panels with a variety of facings.
They are usually cheaper and perform better than foam boards because the
liquid foam moldsitself to all of thesurfaces.
Venting always remains an adequate solution to remove moisture from
under your house, but the evolving consensus is that crawl space insulation
is even better. This insulation keeps homeowner rest assured that the
integrity of their home is not compromised and thereby makes your house a
morecomfortableand healthier placeto livein.
