The Opportunity:
Join the Ontario Science Centre (OSC) – one of Canada’s most visited cultural attractions and a world- renowned educational institution that attracts a million visitors a year. The OSC is currently looking for a Woodshop, Group Leader to join the Exhibit Fabrication team. This position oversees the production of exhibits for local, national and international audiences.
What can I expect in this role?
As a Group Leader, you will oversee staff and supervise the custom building, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of models, static displays and related furniture for exhibition purposes. Through these efforts, you will contribute to the Ontario Science Centre’s success and the remarkable experience of our visitors.
How do I qualify?
Technical Knowledge
• Extensive knowledge of a wide range of materials and/or component parts to select, design, advise on materials required for unique applications.
• Ability to operate machine tools and equipment used to prepare finished products from blueprints etc.
• Practical knowledge of related/allied shop trades is required to address problems/projects in a multi- disciplinary, team approach.
• Mathematical skills to apply advanced applications of geometry algebra and trigonometry to complex calculations and accurate measurements
• Ability to comprehend written technical material (blueprints, drawings, sketches) to assess new products and materials related to own and related occupations/trades, and to advise on the worth of tools and modem materials.
• Demonstrated manual dexterity skills to maintain high standards of precision and finish.
• Ability to provide and receive technical advice to helpers and other trades persons (e.g. welders) who may be involved in construction.
Health and Safety Knowledge
• Knowledge of the safe operation, service and repair of the machine tools used in the production of exhibitry.
• Knowledge of relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant Acts/Regulations.
• Ability to maintain a current knowledge of developments and safety standards within own trade.
Problem Solving Skills
• Problem solving skills to resolve technical problems raised by the team members.
2. • Ability to apply previous resolutions to overcome current challenges and provide input for possible improvement
• Resourcefulness to obtain the necessary information for the development and/or repair of exhibits from a wide variety of sources
Leadership Skills
• Leadership skills to provide work planning, technical supervision and direction to a team of woodwork technicians and an apprentice, in conjunction with the Exhibit Fabrication Manager.
• Ability and willingness to learn allied trades and related occupations to provide supervision and support
• Ability to communicate technical/procedural changes to team and monitor their activity
• Supervisory skills to dispatch work orders to fabricators on rotational basis
Project Management Skills
• Conceptual skills to visualise final product and ability to plan, design, develop all facets of production and identify and solve any construction/installation/maintenance difficulties.
• Project Management skills to assist in the planning, scheduling, and control of projects by planning and documenting shop human and material resource allocation and utilisation, and scheduling and monitoring staff workloads
• Ability to check procedures and work produced in order to assure quality control of exhibits in relation to production and design specifications and licensed requirements (electrical/film projecting/steam-fitting/plumbing, etc.).
• Organizational skills to establish and ensure material requirements for concurrently running projects
Communication Skills
• Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required to deal effectively with designers, draftspersons, skilled trades people and other staff.
• Strong communication skills to explain procedures to staff and liaise on an ongoing basis, with other Centre areas.
• Collaboration skills to work with staff of the design team and other major disciplines (e.g., chemists, physicists etc.)
• Interpersonal skills to build consensus regarding merits and feasibility of designer/scientist's ideas and methods
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to lead a team of diverse members.
