How does your media represent social groups
1. How does your media represent
social groups?
By India Loughlin
2. Gender
• Our media product represents gender; because the two
main characters are female. It represents different types of
women in society, as the main character is a housewife and
mother and the therapist is a professional affluent career
woman.
3. • These are two different representations of
women as the therapist is represented as a
middle class affluent and professional, who
is very in control and calm.
This still shows that
the therapist Dr
Campbell is well put
together, and appears
affluent to the
audience, her attire
shows that she is
young and
professional.
4. • Whereas the Sophie is at first represented as
happy in the beginning then is later
represented as being in distress and out of
control.
Compared to Dr Campbell,
Sophie is being represented
as in distress and
vulnerable. Her outfit
shows that she is grieving
as she is wearing dark
clothes, which contrasts
with the first scene in which
her clothes are bright and
colourful.
Sophie's vulnerability can be seen from the costume change in the
first scene to the second scene, as she is dressed very brightly and
looks positive and happy compared to the second scene where
she looks like she is grieving.
5. • This represents women in two different
ways, it represents women as being
independent and in control, and also
represents women as being vulnerable and
threatened.
6. Class & Status
• Our media product represents class and
status as both the main characters are of an
affluent middle class lifestyle.
This is shown through mise
-en scene in the first scene as
Sophie's kitchen looks like a
typical affluent middle class
kitchen, which helps the
audience to understand that
she is being represented as a
middle class housewife.
7. • However the both characters try to gain
status over one another, as Dr Campbell is
trying to have control over Sophie, showing
a power struggle between the two
characters.
Dr Campbell giving the pills
to Sophie is representing
how she wants to have
control over her, showing
that she wants to be of
higher status than her.
8. • In the final scene Sophie's status is shown as
lower than Dr Campbell's, because she gives
in to Dr Campbell's suggestion of taking the
pills, showing that she now also believes
herself to be in need of help, this shows the
power shift between the two characters.
