To
Cry Me some Rivers over HandwrittenLetters
When I was at fifth grade my Bangla teacher said to me that “your handwriting is not beautiful,
so that you got poor marks in your examination”. From that time I put emphasis on my
handwriting. But when I started my under graduation I realized that beautiful handwriting is not
much important in studies. In a recent article, published on the Dhaka Tribune, the writer Gopa
B. Caesar discussed about the same topic. The writer Caesar (2015), in his article “Cry Me Some
Rivers over Hand Written Letters” says that good handwriting is not a matter of concern in this
era of modern technology. The writer informs us that good handwriting always consider as an art
and makes an advantage to get better marks. The writer then says that nowadays people started
writing with keyboards and keypads instead of pen and paper. The writer then states that in
recent time much institution ceased written documents and using keyboards and printers. Then
the writer informs that many developed countries do not give importance at hand writing but on
the contrary old school people consider handwriting as a fundamental skill. The writer further
states that hand written examination still a part of our education system and still consider as a
good qualification. The writer informs that hand writing is personal issue and it derives from
one’s brain signal. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the article, discuss my points of
agreement which is includes using keyboards and printers instead of pen and paper , also my
discuss my point of disagreement which includes we would not need to write with pen and
paper, getting better marks and provide my thoughts on the issue raised by the author.
This particular article written by Mr. Gopa B Caesar is clearly targeting the students, teachers,
parents, educational activists of the whole world. The purpose of this essay not to take
handwriting as a matter of concern by the parents and teachers. Besides the writer also wanted to
create awareness regarding good handwriting. The writer also discussed on some different
points such as our education system, good handwriting consider as an art, understandable
handwriting so that anyone can read all contents. I feel myself that the purpose of writer is to
create awareness to write understandable writing and using keyboards and printers instead of pen
paper as it is an era of digitalization.
6. To begin with from my point of view, I completely agree with the author on some points. I agree
with that using keyboards and printers instead of pen and paper as it is an era digitalization.
Using keyboards and printers makes all contents clear and beautiful. Anyone can easily change
the size of the font according to his expectation. If anyone’s hand writing is bad and not
understandable then using keyboards and printers can easily solve the problem. I also agree with
that handwriting is still apart of our education system. In many developed countries students
give their exams through computer. They do not use pen and paper to give their exams. In our
education system our students are still using pen and paper to give their exams and admission
test. We are not taking part in this digitalization. I also agree with that handwriting is a
fundamental skill. In our country good handwriting always consider as an art. For example when
I was at class eight my teacher told me that your handwriting looks like an art. It is a good skill.
On the other hand in USA, UK and many other developed countries’ students are more
comfortable to use keypads and keyboards instead of pen and paper. One statistics showed that
70% students of UK (Published on The Guardian on 16 December, 2014) do not give importance
to their writing. They are not worried about their handwriting. In order to keep up the tradition
we should practice handwriting besides using keypads and keyboards. So in order to get some
benefits we all should practice handwriting.
However apart from my point of disagreement I also disagree with some points with the writer.
To begin with, I do not agree with the writer that we would not need to write to pen and paper
as it is an era of digitalization. But in my own perspective I think that no matter what is we
always need to write pen and paper to express our thoughts. For example if a writer wants to
write a book he will need pen and paper to start his writing of his book. He would not feel
comfortable with keyboards and keypads. For example I always feel comfortable to write in
paper and I believe that writing with pen and paper is more comfortable because in keyboards
everyone is not as fast to type quickly. I also strongly disagree with that good hand writing
always help us to get good marks. For example, my handwriting is beautiful. If I write irrelevant
topic in the exam script teacher will not give me better marks. On the other hand if my friend’s
handwriting is not beautiful as me but he wrote relevant topic then he should get better marks
than me. In a survey showed that 80% students think that hand writing does not make any
difference to get better marks in their exams and 20% think that hand writing makes a benefit to
get good marks (Prothom Alo,10 April 2013 ). I think that good hand writing does not make any
extra benefit to get better marks but it helps to understand the content. Therefore, I think that we
all should practice handwriting because we can easily express our thoughts by our writings.
To conclude, I think the writer raised some excellent points which I feel agree with but at same
time I feel disagree with him on some points. I believe that good handwriting is a good quality
and it is a fundamental skill but I disagree with that good hand writing good handwriting helps to
7. get good marks. On the whole I think we should create awareness among people about benefit of
handwriting and not worry too much about handwriting. I also believe that it is good time to
change our examination system. We should not always depend on handwriting as it is an era of
digitalization. We should use keyboards and keypads besides pen and paper. From my fifth grade
, when I came to know that good handwriting matter I put emphasis on my Hand writing but in
this digital era we are not using pen and paper much!
