RethinkingInnovation
Peter Henderson
not only can data exfiltration
be a huge risk for an organi-
zation, poor management
of data loss prevention (DLP) can be
a big drag on innovation, growth and
employee morale. This article speaks
to one aspect of this risk, one data loss
prevention strategy, and how it can
improve employee satisfaction and
performance, company-wide.
Internal actors are responsible
for 43 per cent of data loss
A recent global report by Intel titled
Grand Theft Data — Data Exfiltration
Study: Actors, Tactics and Detection, states
“internal actors were responsible for 43
per cent of data loss, half of which is
intentional, half accidental.” Whether
accidental or deliberate, these actors
are more likely to exfiltrate data using
laptops and USB drives.
One of the report’s recommendations
states: “To adequately address the
intentional internal threat, organizations
should review their security technologies
with the goal of understanding what con-
trols are in place to protect the data from
physical extraction, such as laptop theft
or transmission to USB drive, and from
digital extraction, such as email transmis-
sion or upload to cloud services.” While
the level of incidence is much higher in
the Asia Pacific region than in North
America, it is still worthwhile taking
note. Internal actors include employees,
contractors and third-party suppliers. The
report is available at www.mcafee.com
The challenge for many organizations,
especially small- to medium-size compa-
nies, is that they don’t know how to go
about evaluating this threat and putting
sensible systems and protocols in place.
Will new procedures and systems be
sufficient, or be considered overbearing?
The good news is that new procedures
can have a positive impact on employee
morale and performance.
Seeking expert independent
advice & outsourcing your IT
needs in bundles
Regardless of your company size, seeking
advice from a Virtual Chief Information
Officer (CIO) can be the good approach
for your business, and lead to greater
employee satisfaction and efficiencies,
while addressing DLP.
Earlier this year in conversation with
Chris Henry (a past CIO, past corporate
director of IT Operations for Four
Seasons and now Virtual CIO at Dare
Innovative), I learned that successful
businesses of all sizes are outsourcing
bundled computer and data security
systems, while refocusing the efforts of
their IT staff. Who better to hear this
from than a past IT director from one of
world’s best “customer experience” orga-
nizations? Henry informs, “Regardless
of your business size, you can now get
fully managed high-performance laptop
or desktop hardware with PCI-DSS-
and PIPEDA-level security, standard
Windows image, MS Office, backup in
Canada and support 24/7 — including
replacement on loss or breakage within
48 hours. The security protection services
include hard drive encryption and host-
based security software that is kept updated
automatically and monitored, also 24/7.”
He went on to add “As a CIO, I couldn’t
deliver this level of support, security and
performance, including hardware, for
such a low cost.” It can be worthwhile
to have a conversation with an external
and independent IT professional. If you
are interested in reaching Henry, his
contact information is available at
www.dareinnovative.com. Surely
Henry will be able to put “PCI-DSS
and PIPEDA” in laymen terms.
Taking a new approach can help your
organization de-risk, while improving its
profitability and innovativeness.
