Colloidal Iron and Clays can play a disproportionate role in causing flow assurance problems:
1. Emulsion Stabilization
2. Pad formation in Separators
3. Pipeline solids and sludges
4. Plugging Water Injection and Disposal Wells - Colloidal Charged Particles do not Follow the ’Size Exclusion Rules’ in
formation skin damage plugging mechanisms

• Colloidal Iron is submicron
• High Charge Density
• Large Surface Area
• Iron cations associate with negatively charged colloidal solids (i.e. clays and silicates)
• Quickly becomes oil wet and acts like a glue to agglomerate/sludge other solids with polar oil
fractions (asphaltenes & maltene resins)
• Stabilize ‘Pickering Style O/W emulsions’ making phase separation more difficult
Charged Iron is often the Glue

• Polymeric Wax Inhibitors are proving effective in keeping downhole wax micro-crystalline and
dispersed so they can be mobilized and brought to surface
• Everyone would agree that moving wax deposition issues from downhole to surface is a prudent
and preferable alternative to wax knifing, costly well shutdowns, and work-overs. The
opportunity cost of lost production is too high
• Micro-crystalline wax tied up with polar polymeric wax inhibitors invariably finds its way into the
brine production treating system. Undersized inlet separators do not help
Treating Wax at Surface Always Preferable
18. The very white opaque Inlet Brine is contaminated with
colloidal wax/organics & sometimes stabilized further by
colloidal iron, silica and clays

inhibitors and biocides
• Surfactants render wax surface hydrophilic - hydrated
with water
• Enhanced zeta potential can stabilize poly-dispersed

SCi7775 is a powerful anti-foulant which uses a blend of high-performance additives to
achieve scale control
It is a high activity chelant, which effectively inhibits iron cations in the presence of
calcium and high TDS brines
It has water wetting capacities for removing oil filming and keeping scaling cations
soluble in mixed pH regimes
Capacity to provide Anionic Flocculation to help clarify cationic colloidal poly
dispersions of wax
VerdeChem ICA (Iron Control & Anti-Foulant)
24. • Colloidal wax can pass through process filtration - with
subsequent cooling flocculate downstream
• SCi7775 treatment and soak - flocculate colloidal wax to
surface in water tanks. Any colloidal Iron is effectively
chelated.
• Specialized wax solvents (CD100i) can then solvate the
wax

used to solvate the colloidal wax and keep any
remaining wax dispersed
