Buffers Lab
1. Buffers Lab
There is a buffers lab in the BSCS: a molecular approach text. I do eggwhites, distilled water and alka seltzer (great
buffer). Students put a measured amount of each of substances (20 ml to 30 ml) in different beakers. Add .1MNaOH
drop by drop to each substance. swirl. check pH. continue until 30 drops. Then do the experiment again this time
using .1MHCl. Graph results. Water should change the most, followed by eggwhites (or liver or potato or???) then the
alka seltzer moves very little. I have, with a little background, had students design the basic procedures of this lab
beforehand so that they have a clearer understanding of what they are doing.
