What is an Electronic
Verification Code (EVC)?
A 10 digit alpha-numeric
code which can be
generated by one or more
of 4 different ways by
eligible taxpayers to
validate their income tax
return.
Upon successful validation
of the EVC, the taxpayer
shall not be required to
send the signed ITR-V form
to CPC, Bangalore.
EVC is an environment friendly method of validation of return. H&R Block
recommends use of EVC.

How to generate an EVC?
4 OPTIONS
If you cannot use any of the option above to validate your return, then you are
required to send the signed copy of Form ITR V to the Income Tax
Department’s Centralized Processing Centre in Bangalore by ordinary post or
speed post.

EVC with Net Banking Account
• The bank should be enlisted by the ITD. All major Indian banks such as HDFC
Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, SBI, Kotak Bank, etc. are enlisted.
• If the account is jointly held, the taxpayer should be the primary account holder.
• The verification code shall be sent to the number registered on the ITD’s portal.
• Taxpayers should first update their mobile number on the ITD’s website before
generating the EVC
• The verification code shall be valid for 72 hours.

• The OTP/EVC shall be sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI.
• The OTP/EVC shall be valid for 10 minutes.

EVC by direct OTP from ITD
• Applicable only to low risk taxpayers - i) Income less than Rs. 5 Lakh, and ii) no
refund
• The verification code shall be sent to the number registered on the ITD’s portal.
• The OTP shall be valid for 72 hours.
8. If an EVC is lost or expired, a new EVC can be regenerated.
A separate EVC is to be generated and validated for each return e-filed. For every
return e-filed, the EVC should be generated & validated within 120 days of e-filing.
If the taxpayer does not have the password to his account on the income tax
department’s portal, the net banking account method would be most suitable to him.
He can log into his account on the ITD’s portal by using the net banking acount.
Only in Aadhaar based EVC, the EVC is sent to the mobile number linked to the
Aadhaar card. In all other cases, the EVC is sent to the mobile number registered on
the tax payer’s account with the ITD’s e-filing portal.
It is important to update the mobile number in the account on ITD’s portal before
sending the request for the EVC.
