1. I must confess that my idea of what digital marketing is was not the same as the following
description of it in Wikipedia:
Digital marketing is the component of marketing that utilizes internet and online based
digital technologies such as desktop computers, mobile phones and other digital media and
platforms to promote products and services.[1][2]
Its development during the 1990s and
2000s, changed the way brands and businesses use technology for marketing. As digital
platforms became increasingly incorporated into marketing plans and everyday life,[3]
and as
people increasingly use digital devices instead of visiting physical shops,[4][5]
digital
marketing campaigns have become prevalent, employing combinations of search engine
optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), content marketing, influencer
marketing, content automation, campaign marketing, data-driven marketing, e-commerce
marketing, social media marketing, social media optimization, e-mail direct marketing,
display advertising, e–books, and optical disks and games have become commonplace.
Digital marketing extends to non-Internet channels that provide digital media, such as
television, mobile phones (SMS and MMS), callback, and on-hold mobile ring tones.[6]
The
extension to non-Internet channels differentiates digital marketing from online marketing.
I must admit that i thought it was a kind of online marketing that involves courses and
ebooks and membership sites as opposed to selling physical product online. So now I stand
corrected and as usual every day spent online brings new revelations. I have never
described myself as a digital marketer and since I am not involved in non-internet channels it
seems I was right not to do so.
This information which is new to me is altering the content on this blog. Originally I was
going to be focusing on creating courses and ebooks and membership sites and lead
magnets - in other words all that good stuff which we create to start and grow our
businesses.
I used to have off-line business including a Greek restaurant and a mortgage business. I
remember well the investment required to open these businesses and the amount of work
involved. Often business owners have to spend all their savings and even take out loans to
struggle through the first few months or even years of setting up a business and taking it to
the stage when it is actually making a profit. Only one in five succeed. In the current
situation many businesses have been forced to close and all the work and investment has
disappeared in the blink of an eye.
It always amazes me just how much business owners are prepared to spend/risk on their
new offline ventures, yet when they decide to move their business online they are trying to
keep their investment to the bare minimum. For example in the restaurant business the
costs include the cost of the premises, decor that will impress the potential customers,
professional equipment for the kitchen, staff wages, rates, lighting, tables and chairs - the list
goes on and on. Why then do those who have already had experience in business not
appreciate that although some online marketers have been able to start from scratch and
build multi-million businesses - they are in a very small minority.
Most of us have to invest time and money to learn the necessary skills. You can't just go to
Fiverr and get all your blogs and videos and social media marketing done for you. It's not
2. easy to find those who have English as their first language who have the skills that you are
lacking. There is no magic button. There are incredible rewards waiting for those who are
prepared to put a lot of time and effort into their online business. It involves trial and error,
testing and tracking and so much more.
It can be addictive. Who would sit up to the early hours of the morning to listen to a webinar
or write a blogpost? Only the crazy ones who have an unshakeable belief that one day they
will reach their goals and it will all have been worthwhile. So if you have got that crazy gene
and would love to become a digital marketer - here is the best place that I know to start
learning from the 7 figure earners and take your first steps into this very special online world
