2017 showed design's many unintended consequences on society. But it also shined a light on design ethics, moving us from learning about hooking our users, to a place where we can think about the long-term effects of our design on society.

THE INFORMATION
ARCHITECTURE SUMMIT
It all started at the IA Summit’s conference on Artificial
Intelligence where I watched two very different talks
back to back
4. AI for IA’s: Machine
Learning Demystified
Carol Smith
Carol’s talk aimed to reassure us that AI was
still in its infancy and could help automate
basic procedures, with an ongoing guidance by
human input

7. The Futures We Want:
Architecting Reality
Kaleem Khan
Kaleem showed us the potential dangers of AI
today, including issues with security, privacy,
and who has power over technology
8. The X-47B is able to land, unmanned, at an aircraft carrier, the most precise maneuver you can
ask from fighter aircraft. Kaleem asks us to consider the way we would make a decision to wage
war against other humans when we no longer have to sacrifice humans on our side?
10. Speaking of Trump and presidential elections, Facebook got itself into trouble with its
algorithms, which helped to spread Fake News. And in general, people questioned
Facebook’s current value to society.
11. “I don't remember doing this [creating
addictive behavior] consciously, and I
launched the like button. I remember
doing explicit tests to not want it to
cannibalize comments because
emotionally, comments were more
rewarding.
The like button, if it traded a comment
for 2 likes would have been a failure in
the team that launched its eyes.
It's a success if it gets more people to
have affirmation from their peers.”
-Jared Morgenstern

growing tourism in once locals-only spots?

15. “The ultimate freedom is a
free mind, and we need
technology that’s on our
team to help us live, feel,
think and act freely.”

17. “A new design culture won’t arise
due to any new science of human
nature, or any new philosophy.
Only with a new understanding of
daily life, when a new aspect of
each designer’s inner life is
brought into focus, and that new
focus changes their vision of what
society is all about.”

centered designers”
