Ancient Town

The ancient Romans were master builders. Many temples, roads and aqueducts constructed during
Roman times have held up remarkably despite the wear-and-tear-in the form of military invasions,
tourist mobs and natural disasters such as earthquakes-they’ve had to endure. In particular,
geologists and engineers have long been fascinated by Roman harbors, many of which stand almost
intact after 2,000 years or more, despite constant pounding by seawater. Now, a team of researchers
from Italy and the United States has analyzed a sample of concrete taken from a breakwater in
Italy’s Pozzuoli Bay, at the northern tip of the Bay of Naples, which dates back to 37 B.C. Their
findings, reported earlier this month in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society and American
Mineralogist, may revolutionize modern architecture.

Singapore, officially the Republic of

Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island

country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the

southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is 137

kilometres north of the equator.

Population: 5.399 million (2013) World Bank

Official languages: English, Malay, Tamil,
Standard Mandarin

Singapore has 137 kilometres (85 mil) north of the equator. The country territory consists of
lozenge-shaped main island, The country is highly urbanised and little of the original vegetation
remains consistently expanded through land reclamation. it provides the dynamic environment that
allows us to weave our design skills and research into an exciting range of sustainable urban
projects. A leader in innovative and sustainable design, we have revolutionised the local build
industry with the use of 3D technology and developed design solutions tailored for the tropical
climate.

!
Gardens by the Bay brings to life NPark’s vision of creating a City in
Garden. The Gardens capture the essence of Singapore as the premier
tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live and
work - making Singapore a leading global city of the 21st century. In
January 2006, an international master plan design competition was
launched to seek world-class design ideas for Gardens by the Bay. It
drew more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms, from over 24
countries, including 35 from Singapore. An 11-member Jury
comprising local and international experts shortlisted eight teams and
two winners were announced in September 2006; namely Grant
Associates for Bay South and Gustafson Porter for Bay East, both
from the UK. A decision was made to develop Bay Central later. A
public exhibition of the master plan concepts and models of the
winning teams was held in September 2006 at the Singapore Botanic
Gardens. Over 10,000 people visited the exhibition and over 700 gave
their feedback. An overwhelming majority 85% of those surveyed
liked the features in the master plans and over 97% said they would
visit the gardens.

These are some of the 'supertrees' - a grove of metal and concrete 'trees' betwen 30 & 50m high that
dominate the park's skyline (& put on a fine show at night, when they contribute to the light show
along the downtown waterfront). They're living gardens, clothed in vertical gardens & with a sky-
walk running among them. At the top of each 'tree' is a bank of solar panels, harvesting sunlight to
power the park's systems; they also include a system to collect and distribute rainwater, & in
addition act as exhaust and cooling systems for the huge domed conservatories nearby.

Cooled Conservatories, Gardens by Bay
Underlying the concept of Gardens by the Bay are the principles of environmental sustainability.
Much effort was made to plan and design for sustainable cycles in energy and water throughout Bay
South Garden.

Water Loop Illustrating Singapore’s Water Management

!
NEWater and desalinated water are not dependent on rainfall and can be used to supplement water
from local reservoirs in an extended dry spell. NEWater and desalinated water will meet about two-
thirds of Singapore’s water demand by 2020. The capacity for these two sources of water will be
further increased to meet up to 80% of our water demand by 2060.

!

Water conservation is an important complementary strategy to ensure Singapore’s long-term water
sustainability. Through public outreach and other measures, the daily per capital domestic water
consumption has dropped from 165 litres in 2003 to 153 litres in 2011.

The long-term target, set out in the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, is 147 litres in 2020.

To development of drainage infrastructure in Singapore, amounting to S$2 billion over the last 30

years, has reduced flood prone areas from about 3,200ha in the 1970s to about 49ha as at January
2012. With PUB’s ongoing drainage improvement works, these flood prone areas will be
progressively reduced over time.

The climate change may contribute to rising temperatures in Singapore they could experience
warmer temperatures as a result of the urban heat island effect.

Higher annual temperatures can lead to heat stress, as well as greater use of air-conditioning,
increasing Singapore’s energy demands. While we have sufficient generation capacity to meet such
an increase, we have to be mindful of increasing energy use, which will also result in higher
domestic carbon emissions.Another effect of climate change that may affect urban infrastructure is
wind speeds. Phase 1 of the Climate Change Study found that future wind speeds will not be higher
than the current speeds that our buildings are designed to withstand. Therefore, the structural
integrity of buildings is unlikely to be affected.

!
!
An urban heat island is a metropolitan area which is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural
areas. The temperature difference is usually higher at night than during the day, and is most
apparent when winds are weak.Urban areas tend to be warmer than rural or green areas, largely due
to the replacement of natural land cover with pavement, buildings and other infrastructure that tend
to retain or produce heat.

!
To further develop Singapore as an innovative hub, NRF launched the Campus for Research
Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) in 2006—an international research campus and
innovation hub that houses research centres set up by top global universities and institutes.

Page 10
Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University
Many CREATE centres are working on technologies with potential applications to climate change
mitigation and adaptation, such as environmental technologies, energy storage systems, electric
vehicle technologies, building energy efficiency, nanomaterials for water and energy management,
waste-to-energy, and renewable energy such as solar and algae biofuels. This has given a significant
boost to Singapore’s RD capabilities.

TUM CREATE - Established in 2010 is a collaboration between Technical University of Munich
(TUM) and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. TUM Create researches innovation
technologies and future transportation concepts, particular electric transport infrastructure and
delivery systems and vehicle mobility solution, for Singapore and tropical megacities worldwide.

One area of interdisciplinary research is advanced energy storage technologies

(such as high performance batteries), a key component of electric vehicles. The aim is to reduce the
cost of electric vehicles, improve their range, reduce charging time, explore wireless charging,
enhance battery durability, and ensure safety. TUM’s home campus in Germany, where the strong
cooperation between TUM and its industry partners fosters the creation of new small high-tech
companies.

In pursuing sustainable growth, Singapore has built capabilities that are relevant to other cities
facing similar sustainability challenges. The National Animation Park in Tianjin Eco-city.

!
Clean Tech Park is being developed by JTC Corporation as the first eco-business park in Singapore

It will cluster clean technology companies and serve as platform for test bedding and prototyping
clean technologies and sustainable urban solution. Intelligent Energy System Pilot is a smart grid
project led by EMA, in partnership with Singapore Power, to develop and test new smart grid
technologies and solution for an energy system in Singapore that will improve overall energy
efficiency and resilience.

Clean Tech Park will serve as a nexus for research, innovation and commercialisation

in clean technology

!
many of the technologies being test-bedded will take some time to mature, others—such as solar
energy—are rapidly improving and approaching commercial viability. For such technologies, the
Government is prepared to help build industry capabilities, to scale up the technology for
mass deployment. For example, the HDB is testing solar technology in preparation for wider
adoption. This will pave the way for quicker adoption of solar power when it becomes cost-
competitive with energy from traditional sources. It also provides a platform for building expertise
and exporting capabilities in solar PV retrofitting and integration with buildings.

The Future Town “Prosperous Town”

!
If I were to build my future town from scratch, I would build in the digital infrastructure of sensors,
networks and data analytics as meticulously as the physical infrastructure of buildings, roads, and
utilities.

In a modern city, a robust digital infrastructure is essential to manage the physical resources and
ensure that the city will be liveable and sustainable over the long term. A well-designed digital
infrastructure will support decision-making by public managers as well as private citizens.

By understanding the large volumes of data emitted by a city, it is possible to not only sense and
respond to the current demands of citizens, but also be proactive in anticipating the needs and issues
that citizens may face in the future. A modern city would go far beyond simply sensing what's going
on all around. Good decisions are based on a good understanding of information, which means that
city data from many sources will need to be integrated and analysed rapidly. For example, town
leaders will need high-quality insights to manage a carbon neutrality programme, a social and
health services programme, or an innovative public transportation programme.

The digital infrastructure can provide the insight and foresight needed to support the right
operational decisions, drive long-term plans, and help evolve the city towards its goals, whether
they are social, economic, or environmental.

New X Town

Building More Eco-Friendly TownWhat will the Prosperous town of the future look like? we will
enjoy a clean and green environment, and a high quality of life in a city within a garden. with an
efficient public transport system, innovative use of space for waterways and parks, and vertical
greening. Within existing public housing estates, residents can also enjoy eco-friendly technologies
and solutions as these become available.

Our industries and buildings will become much more energy efficient and make use of advanced
carbon efficient processes and green features. An increasing proportion of our workforce will be
employed in the cleantech industries, benefitting from the growth of Singapore as a cleantech hub
with strong government support.

Our infrastructure will be complemented by “software” improvements. There will be greater
environmentally awareness amongst people, households and companies, and more of them will
adopt eco-friendly lifestyles—the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and energy conservation will become
part of the Prosperous Town way of life.

!
Conclusions

!
!
!
!
we should look at your town plan in two ways.  First, look at things that you can see in a town
streets, buildings, airports, railroads, etc.  Second, look at the community (people) and its needs.
The ability to meet the community's needs drives the size and building of the city.  For example,
there are many ruins from Native American civilisations that no longer met their community's needs
to be engaged in the development and implementation of environmental policies and be encouraged
to take responsibility for the quality of the environment in which they live. Engaging citizens is
more than important; it is a prerequisite for success in developing sustainable environmental
improvements.

  • 4. Ancient Town The ancient Romans were master builders. Many temples, roads and aqueducts constructed during Roman times have held up remarkably despite the wear-and-tear-in the form of military invasions, tourist mobs and natural disasters such as earthquakes-they’ve had to endure. In particular, geologists and engineers have long been fascinated by Roman harbors, many of which stand almost intact after 2,000 years or more, despite constant pounding by seawater. Now, a team of researchers from Italy and the United States has analyzed a sample of concrete taken from a breakwater in Italy’s Pozzuoli Bay, at the northern tip of the Bay of Naples, which dates back to 37 B.C. Their findings, reported earlier this month in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society and American Mineralogist, may revolutionize modern architecture. ! ! Rome in summer. • 5. Present Town ! Singapore Country
! ! Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is 137 kilometres north of the equator. Population: 5.399 million (2013) World Bank Official languages: English, Malay, Tamil, Standard Mandarin ! ! ! ! • 6. Singapore has 137 kilometres (85 mil) north of the equator. The country territory consists of lozenge-shaped main island, The country is highly urbanised and little of the original vegetation remains consistently expanded through land reclamation. it provides the dynamic environment that allows us to weave our design skills and research into an exciting range of sustainable urban projects. A leader in innovative and sustainable design, we have revolutionised the local build industry with the use of 3D technology and developed design solutions tailored for the tropical climate. ! Gardens by the Bay brings to life NPark’s vision of creating a City in Garden. The Gardens capture the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live and work - making Singapore a leading global city of the 21st century. In January 2006, an international master plan design competition was launched to seek world-class design ideas for Gardens by the Bay. It drew more than 70 entries submitted by 170 firms, from over 24 countries, including 35 from Singapore. An 11-member Jury comprising local and international experts shortlisted eight teams and two winners were announced in September 2006; namely Grant Associates for Bay South and Gustafson Porter for Bay East, both from the UK. A decision was made to develop Bay Central later. A public exhibition of the master plan concepts and models of the winning teams was held in September 2006 at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Over 10,000 people visited the exhibition and over 700 gave their feedback. An overwhelming majority 85% of those surveyed liked the features in the master plans and over 97% said they would visit the gardens. • 7. These are some of the 'supertrees' - a grove of metal and concrete 'trees' betwen 30 & 50m high that dominate the park's skyline (& put on a fine show at night, when they contribute to the light show along the downtown waterfront). They're living gardens, clothed in vertical gardens & with a sky- walk running among them. At the top of each 'tree' is a bank of solar panels, harvesting sunlight to power the park's systems; they also include a system to collect and distribute rainwater, & in addition act as exhaust and cooling systems for the huge domed conservatories nearby. ! ! • 8. ! Cooled Conservatories, Gardens by Bay Underlying the concept of Gardens by the Bay are the principles of environmental sustainability. Much effort was made to plan and design for sustainable cycles in energy and water throughout Bay South Garden. • 9. ! ! Water Loop Illustrating Singapore’s Water Management ! NEWater and desalinated water are not dependent on rainfall and can be used to supplement water from local reservoirs in an extended dry spell. NEWater and desalinated water will meet about two- thirds of Singapore’s water demand by 2020. The capacity for these two sources of water will be further increased to meet up to 80% of our water demand by 2060. ! Water conservation is an important complementary strategy to ensure Singapore’s long-term water sustainability. Through public outreach and other measures, the daily per capital domestic water consumption has dropped from 165 litres in 2003 to 153 litres in 2011. The long-term target, set out in the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, is 147 litres in 2020.
To development of drainage infrastructure in Singapore, amounting to S$2 billion over the last 30 years, has reduced flood prone areas from about 3,200ha in the 1970s to about 49ha as at January 2012. With PUB’s ongoing drainage improvement works, these flood prone areas will be progressively reduced over time. Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University Page 9
  • 10. The climate change may contribute to rising temperatures in Singapore they could experience warmer temperatures as a result of the urban heat island effect.

Higher annual temperatures can lead to heat stress, as well as greater use of air-conditioning, increasing Singapore’s energy demands. While we have sufficient generation capacity to meet such an increase, we have to be mindful of increasing energy use, which will also result in higher domestic carbon emissions.Another effect of climate change that may affect urban infrastructure is wind speeds. Phase 1 of the Climate Change Study found that future wind speeds will not be higher than the current speeds that our buildings are designed to withstand. Therefore, the structural integrity of buildings is unlikely to be affected. ! ! An urban heat island is a metropolitan area which is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas. The temperature difference is usually higher at night than during the day, and is most apparent when winds are weak.Urban areas tend to be warmer than rural or green areas, largely due to the replacement of natural land cover with pavement, buildings and other infrastructure that tend to retain or produce heat. ! To further develop Singapore as an innovative hub, NRF launched the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) in 2006—an international research campus and innovation hub that houses research centres set up by top global universities and institutes. Page 10 Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University
  • 11. Many CREATE centres are working on technologies with potential applications to climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as environmental technologies, energy storage systems, electric vehicle technologies, building energy efficiency, nanomaterials for water and energy management, waste-to-energy, and renewable energy such as solar and algae biofuels. This has given a significant boost to Singapore’s RD capabilities. ! ! ! ! ! Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University Page 11
  • 12. ! TUM CREATE - Established in 2010 is a collaboration between Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. TUM Create researches innovation technologies and future transportation concepts, particular electric transport infrastructure and delivery systems and vehicle mobility solution, for Singapore and tropical megacities worldwide. One area of interdisciplinary research is advanced energy storage technologies (such as high performance batteries), a key component of electric vehicles. The aim is to reduce the cost of electric vehicles, improve their range, reduce charging time, explore wireless charging, enhance battery durability, and ensure safety. TUM’s home campus in Germany, where the strong cooperation between TUM and its industry partners fosters the creation of new small high-tech companies. In pursuing sustainable growth, Singapore has built capabilities that are relevant to other cities facing similar sustainability challenges. The National Animation Park in Tianjin Eco-city. Singapore - a living laboratory for test-bedding various clean energy solutions. ! Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University Page 12
  • 13. ! Clean Tech Park is being developed by JTC Corporation as the first eco-business park in Singapore It will cluster clean technology companies and serve as platform for test bedding and prototyping clean technologies and sustainable urban solution. Intelligent Energy System Pilot is a smart grid project led by EMA, in partnership with Singapore Power, to develop and test new smart grid technologies and solution for an energy system in Singapore that will improve overall energy efficiency and resilience.
Clean Tech Park will serve as a nexus for research, innovation and commercialisation in clean technology ! many of the technologies being test-bedded will take some time to mature, others—such as solar energy—are rapidly improving and approaching commercial viability. For such technologies, the Government is prepared to help build industry capabilities, to scale up the technology for mass deployment. For example, the HDB is testing solar technology in preparation for wider adoption. This will pave the way for quicker adoption of solar power when it becomes cost- competitive with energy from traditional sources. It also provides a platform for building expertise and exporting capabilities in solar PV retrofitting and integration with buildings. ! ! ! ! ! • 14. ! ! The Future Town “Prosperous Town” ! If I were to build my future town from scratch, I would build in the digital infrastructure of sensors, networks and data analytics as meticulously as the physical infrastructure of buildings, roads, and utilities. In a modern city, a robust digital infrastructure is essential to manage the physical resources and ensure that the city will be liveable and sustainable over the long term. A well-designed digital infrastructure will support decision-making by public managers as well as private citizens. By understanding the large volumes of data emitted by a city, it is possible to not only sense and respond to the current demands of citizens, but also be proactive in anticipating the needs and issues that citizens may face in the future. A modern city would go far beyond simply sensing what's going on all around. Good decisions are based on a good understanding of information, which means that city data from many sources will need to be integrated and analysed rapidly. For example, town leaders will need high-quality insights to manage a carbon neutrality programme, a social and health services programme, or an innovative public transportation programme. The digital infrastructure can provide the insight and foresight needed to support the right operational decisions, drive long-term plans, and help evolve the city towards its goals, whether they are social, economic, or environmental. Page 14 Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University
  • 15. ! Prosperous Town Plan - Next to the Sea ! The Town is surrounded by the sea. it has its own tourist spot whereby the town is known all over the world the main attraction of the town is the beach and forest park . it simple unique for its underground express train and cable car. ! ! ! ! ! ! Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University Page 15
  • 16. ! ! New X Town Building More Eco-Friendly TownWhat will the Prosperous town of the future look like? we will enjoy a clean and green environment, and a high quality of life in a city within a garden. with an efficient public transport system, innovative use of space for waterways and parks, and vertical greening. Within existing public housing estates, residents can also enjoy eco-friendly technologies and solutions as these become available.

Our industries and buildings will become much more energy efficient and make use of advanced carbon efficient processes and green features. An increasing proportion of our workforce will be employed in the cleantech industries, benefitting from the growth of Singapore as a cleantech hub with strong government support.

Our infrastructure will be complemented by “software” improvements. There will be greater environmentally awareness amongst people, households and companies, and more of them will adopt eco-friendly lifestyles—the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and energy conservation will become part of the Prosperous Town way of life. Page 16 Hazel Razon Crisostomo / 0320152 / Ms Renee / FNBE AUNGUST 2014 / Taylor’s University
  • 17. ! Conclusions ! ! ! ! we should look at your town plan in two ways.  First, look at things that you can see in a town streets, buildings, airports, railroads, etc.  Second, look at the community (people) and its needs.  The ability to meet the community's needs drives the size and building of the city.  For example, there are many ruins from Native American civilisations that no longer met their community's needs to be engaged in the development and implementation of environmental policies and be encouraged to take responsibility for the quality of the environment in which they live. Engaging citizens is more than important; it is a prerequisite for success in developing sustainable environmental improvements. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
