PRESENTATION AT
ROUND 3, SOCIOBATOR CREATIVE
BY
HARSH SHRIVASTAVA
CEO, WORLD DEVELOPMENT FORUM
Innovation across
Social, Corporate, Public spheres
India is changing and churning—faster!
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
2
 Old problems—health, education, power
 New problems—traffic, water, empowerment
 Old solutions—big, badly-run government
 New solutions—companies, society, technology, YOU
 Old process—big meetings with bigwigs for big
plans.
 New process—apps, hackathons, and Sociobator!
Old and new coexist—badly
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
3
 Conditions for a better interface between all the
stakeholders are either:
 Just right—only in this churn, can you and I, challenge the
status quo.
 Will never be right—big slow India can never keep up
with faster China or nimbler Africa.
 How can we move faster from the old ways to the
new needs?
 Aspirations, globalization, information, media, technology,
and youth are the levers of change.
Links are getting stronger, slowly
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
4
 Corporate governance to social innovation—fast
 Corporate governance to social responsibility—
medium
 Social responsibility to social innovation—medium
 Public policy to corporate governance—sow
 Public policy to social innovation—slow
 Public policy to social responsibility—medium
Public policy is the weakest link in the chain!
Biggest gap--politics
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
5
 Your elections—what was in the manifestos?
 What was the first action of your CM?
 How to make political parties respond to the
changing aspirations?
 Third party politics may not work—Ashwin’s valiant
efforts.
 But this is a two-way street—do you know your
MLAs’ name? How often have you met your
corporator?
Some opportunities that can be taken
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
6
 Combine mass media with mobile
 A dedicated Satyamev Jayate app that could be used to
follow-up each episode.
 Link languages to each other
 Too much “gyan” in English; too little in Hindi or Kannada!
 A multi-language legal app that tells you relevant laws
 Businesses get together to build ladders for SMES.
 Startups not as important economically as Grow-ups!
 Google I/O; what about a Tata/Startup meet
 Rich religions spread their philanthropy to others
 Akshayapatra kitchens expand to feed adults too
Coalition of communities
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
7
 Women—www.fleximoms.in and SEWA with
 Dalits—DICCI with
 Muslim businessses—NMDFC with
 Farmers—so many Rythu Sanghas with
 Disabled—Spastics Society with
 Slumdwellers—Sobhi Mohanty can tell much more
 How can these “disadvantaged” groups learn from
and support each other?
Two broad gaps that need to be addressed
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
8
 People’s aspirations are not being supported by
political parties
 Businesses, governments, and civil society are not
talking together or constructively to see how they
can collectively meet development goals
Priorities for action
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
9
 Improve government’s capacity to deliver services
 Most money is with government
 Poorest execution ability, especially in third tier
 What people want most
 Build local problem solving capability
 Traffic, trees, and trash
 Support my friend Ashwin Mahesh
 Bring global best practices to Bangalore—and to
Bhubaneshwar
 Not to mention to the boondocks of Bagalkot and Bellary
Professional Plug: WDF
February 23, 2016World Development Forum
10
 Three Round Tables to clearly define key issues and
challenges.
 First Round held Table in New Delhi held in March,
addressed by: Arun Maira, Raghuram Rajan, and Shyam
Saran.
 Roundtables to be followed by crowd-sourcing of
the identified issues and challenges.
 Emanating from this first-of-its-kind technology
exercise, fine-tune and create a focused agenda for
the first Annual Gathering of the Forum in February
2014 at Nalanda, Bihar.
The Nalanda Global Initiative
World Development Forum
11
 Large international gathering of thought leaders,
domain experts and representatives of all
stakeholders to discuss key challenges.
 As thrown up by Round Tables and prioritized by the
Internet.
 To come up with answers that are politically
relevant at the national, sub-national, and local
level.
