Refurbishment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mallavi Base
Hospital
The Base Hospital Mallavi is in Mullaitivu district which was very
adversely affected by the civial war which ended in 2009. This hospital
servers a population of 45,000 to 50,000. The hospital is 63 km away
from Mullaitivu General Hospital. For all the medical and surgical
emergencies, the patients are now being referred to Mullaitivu General
Hospital from Mallavi hospital due to lack of facilities for an ICU.
Moreover, the people living in these areas are subjected to several
displacements and are below poverty line. As such they are reluctant
to go to Mullaitivu General Hospital. Hence establishing an ICU at
Mallavi hospital will reduce the number of patients being transferred to
Mullaitivu General Hospital and lessens the hardships of the people.
According to Communities Without Boundaries – “Mallavi, in the Northern
Vanni region of Sri Lanka, as a location that requires immediate post-
conflict development work. The village currently lacks basic physical
infrastructure, including housing, clean water, sanitation systems, health
clinic, community center etc. It also lacks basic social infrastructure,
including medical facilities, transportation, and education and employment
opportunities.”1

Following medical equipment’s are urgently required and will enable the
doctors to deliver care to the local patients
Total project cost to complete an ICU has been identified to be in the vicinity
of 6 million Sri Lankan Rupes or approximately AUD $52,000 or USD
$46,000.
This project will fund the renovation of the existing building and provide
essential medical equipment.
