PLANTS IN INDIANA
    By: Hannah Deering
LILAC
General information:
• Color: Violet/Lilac
• Bloom: Late spring, early summer
• Where are they found?: Shrubbs
• Fragrant/Non-Fragrant: Fragrant
Environment needed for plant to grow:
• A lot of sunlight
• Less fertilizer
• Drier rather than damp soil
How they are affected by the environment:
• Lack of sunlight means little too no flowers
• More fertilizer means more leaves and less flowers
• Too much moisture in soil causes the roots to rot.
ASTER
General Information:
• Colors: White, Purple, Blue, Red, Pink
• Bloom: Mid/Late Summer and Mid/Late Fall
• This is a protected plant, so check before uprooting
• Look like small daisy’s
Environment needed for plant to grow:
• Full sun or partial sun
• Needs extremely moist soil
• Soil type should be loamy, which means medium-
   textured
How they are affected by their environment:
• Some insects will give these flowers diseases that can
   cause distorted or green buds
• Not receiving sunlight will cause them to not bloom and
   eventually die
• Dry soil will cause the flowers wilt. They must be rained
on or given water regularly to survive.
WHITE PINE
  General Information:
  • Needles: Long, thin needles in groups of 5
  • Cones: Long, slim cones 3in-10in long
  • Grows up to 100ft tall
Environment needed for plant to grow:
  • Full Sun
  • Able to go long amounts of time without water
  • Can live in both wet and dry conditions
How they are affected by their environment:
  • They can grow in any soil
  • They can live in both hot and cold environments
  • Too much shade will eventually cause them to die
  • Too much water can essentially cause them to
    drown
RED MAPLE
  General Information:
  • Color: Green, then Red during Fall
  • Leaves: 2-4 inches long and arranged opposite
    from each other
  • Height: Grows up to 75ft tall
Environment needed for plant to grow:
  • Partly sun, partly shade or full sun
  • Can tolerate most soils
  • Needs a moderate amount of water
How they are affected by their environment:
  • Can stand both hot and cold temperatures
  • Fungus can weaken the trunk of the Red Maple
  • When they are not getting enough water, they
become scorched, which means that parts of the
leaves turn light brown (usually during summer)
TRUMPET CREEPER
     General Information:
     • Where are they found?: Vines
     • Bloom: Summer/Early Fall
     • Height: Up to 65 feet tall
     • Color: Red, Orange, Gold, Yellow
Environment needed for plant to grow:
     • Grows in most any soil, except for extremely
        heavy and wet soil
     • Partial shade/sun or Full sun
     • Average water
How they are affected by their environment:
     • It is drought tolerant, so it can last in most
        conditions
     • It will not survive when it is planted in
        extremely wet soils
     • It can last cold temperatures unless it gets
        colder than -30F
NEW JERSEY TEA
    General Information:
    • Where is it found?: Shrub
    • Leaves: 5-10cm wide
    • Color: Soft pink, white
    • Bloom: Summer
Environment needed for plant to grow:
    • Sandy soils or rocky hillsides, or light, well
       drained soil
    • Partial Shade or Full sun
    • Average water
How they are affected by their environment:
    • Some environments can cause leaf spot and
       powdery mildew
    • They can tolerate dry harsh conditions
    • Too much water can cause problems for this
       plant
CONDUCTING
                    EXPERIMENTS

Please follow these steps to collect your data:
• 1. Look for the plants outside of school with parental
   supervision.
• 2. Take notes about the plants and its surrounding
   environment.
• 3. Then take a sample of the plant home and identify it
by using this Plant Identification Website.
• Please be detailed in your notetaking and identification,
because the information you find will be used to compare
results with the classroom in Texas.
