The best places to visit
There’s no place on earth like Brazil. It has some of the most beautiful
beaches in the world, some of the busiest, most exciting cities, as well as the
biggest area of unexplored rainforest on the planet. Most people live near the sea
so there is a lot of empty space.
The country is, of course, enormous. In fact, Brazil is the fifth largest
country in the world. It covers half of South America and has borders with every
South American country except Chile and Ecuador. It has 19 cities and more than
170 million people.
Brazil is a fascinating place to visit. The people are warm and friendly and
they generally welcome tourists to their country. Traditionally, Brazilians give
presents to their hosts when they visit people, so it’s a good idea if you do the
same! Typical gifts include flowers, sweets, and champagne.
13. 13
When we think ofBrazil, we think offootball, music, dancing, and beaches.
The mostpopular pastimes will not comeas a surprised playing football, listening
to music, dancing, walking on the beach, or just talking.
Family life is very important and eating together is always special. The
most important meal of the day is at about 1.00 p.m. The evening meal doesn’t
begin until about 9.00 or 10.00 p.m. And then the parties begin. A party can start
at any time and for any reason, and go on until the early hours of the morning.
Nobody worries about work the next day.
How do Brazilians stay awake with such a lifestyle? Well, Brazil also
produces some of the best coffee in the world!

survive in the jungle. Alana Harris gives us some ideas.
When you’re in the jungle, you need to leave all your luxuries at home! That
means, forget your mobile phone, your favourite coffee, your chocolate bars, and
your CD player. When you’re in the jungle, you need only four things – water,
food, shelter, and fire. You can find all of these easily, but you must know what
to look for.
14. 14
Let’s start with water. Even though there’s a lot of water in most tropical
environments, youmay not find it immediately. One way to discoverit is to follow
animals and birds, as they need liquid regularly. Insects can also be a good sign,
because they usually build their nests near water. However, don’t only look for
rivers. You can also find water in plants such as vines, roots, and palm trees.
You can usually find a lot of food in the jungle, but you must be happy to
eat things you wouldn’t normally want to, for example, insects. However, you
need to know the difference between those you can eat and those that are
poisonous, so start reading about them now! For cooking and for warmth, collect
dry firewood, leaves, and grass. Then make fire using dry sticks – or take a box
of matches or a lighter with you!
The type of shelter you need depends on the weather and the kind of
animals that are in the jungle. Malaria-carrying mosquitoes and other insects can
be very dangerous, so protect yourself against bites. If you don’thave any insect
repellent, try putting mud on your skin.
Of course, if you’re lost in the jungle, you’ll want to get home again. The
sun and stars can help you find your way, so you might want to study astronomy.
Alternatively, when you find a river, follow it. People usually live near rivers, so
if you walk along the river bank, eventually you’ll find a village.

George Franklin married his wartime girlfriend, Betsy Kennedy, last Friday
– fifty-five years after they had first met at a dance. The couple’s romance started
after George, an American, had been sent to an army base near Betsy’s home in
England. The couple, who were both seventeen at the time, were separated when
George was sent to the Pacific. They wrote to each other every day for two years
but at the end of the war George returned to the US.
George and Betsy both married other people but they never forgot about
each other. In 2002, four years after his wife had died, George decided to search
for Betsy through the Internet. It took him six months and at the end of that time
he was amazed to get an email from Betsy’s daughter inviting him to visit Britain.
Betsy, who had divorced her husband in the 1980s, said, ‘I was so excited when I
heard from George. I had never forgotten him. When we met him at the airport, I
was delighted – he looked exactly the same, he hadn’t changed in all those years.’
George told our reporter, ‘I hadn’tseen her for more than half a century but I knew
immediately that I wanted to marry her. My only regret is that I hadn’t looked for
her sooner. We have both kept all those letters we wrote in the war.’
