  5. 5. Our music video generally challengesthe codes and conventions of realmedia texts. The song we chose to dowas a cover of Madonna’s pop song‘Like A Virgin’ by ‘The Voice’contestant Vince Kidd. As a pair wenoticed that Vince Kidd’s cover ofMadonna’s song, was from the RnBgenre. Music videos from this genreare usually performance or conceptbased. Vince Kidd’s music video forthis song is performance based.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SolTS8daTQgOur music video was a narrative, challenging the usual conventions ofthe particular genre and the originalreal media text.MUSIC VIDEO
  6. 6. SIMILARITIES/DIFFERENCESBETWEEN MADONNA’S‘LIKEA VIRGIN’AND VINCE KIDD’SIn Madonna’s music video, the male is in control of the sexualsituation and the Madonna is sure in her decision for this where asmy music video has the female in control of the situation and themale not very sure about what he wants to do.HOWEVERBoth videos similarly use a bed in the music videos and have asimilar camera angle and positioning.
  7. 7. LAURA MULVEY – MALEGAZETHEORYThis theory suggests that thecamera/audience always represents aheterosexual man’s perspective ofscene objectifying women. Our music video challenges thisTheory as the focus of the music videois on the male, the theory has beenflipped. The focus on the maleProtagonists vulnerability as a virginsubverts the theory.HOWEVERFeatures. In this theory women areoften portrayed as objects and thisconforms to the conventions of theRnB genre. Our music video sexualisesthe female protagonists. Our music video does carry somerepresentations of the theory.
  8. 8. PosterIn terms of creating a poster, it wasvery difficult to research a poster forVince Kidd’s cover of ‘Like A Virgin’,as he didn’t release it as a single, therefore there was no poster.Instead we looked at the poster forhis latest released single ‘Sick Love’.Our media product challenged theconventions of the poster we werefocusing on. Our poster has nothingto do with the artist. Instead it takesthe animations from the narrative tosymbolise the subject matter ofvirginity and innocence in contrast toother posters in the RnB genre thatput a heavy focus on the artist orband. In terms of creating a poster, it wasvery difficult to research a poster forVince Kidd’s cover of ‘Like A Virgin’,as he didn’t release it as a single, therefore there was no poster.Instead we looked at the poster forhis latest released single ‘Sick Love’.Our media product challenged theconventions of the poster we werefocusing on. 9. 9. ALBUM COVERAbove is Madonna’s album cover for ‘Like A Virgin’, where she is the main focus andher name is evidently bigger than the name of the song . In our first design of ouralbum cover we decided to make our artists name bigger than the song title similarto the way Madonna did. In terms of that, we used conventions from a real mediaproduct in our draft. However the draft had no other relation to the artist as itconsisted of silhouettes to represent the facelessness of our subject matter. Ourfinal version of our album cover further challenges Madonna’s album cover becausethe artists name ‘Vince Kidd’ is smaller that the title of the song, connoting that themessage of the song hold more of a significance that the artist. The purpose ofMadonna’s cover is to sell the artist rather than the song.
  10. 10. LIPSYNCINGAn important convention of a music video is lip syncing, most musicvideos have lip syncing. My music video only contains a few seconds oflip syncing, challenging the conventions of real media texts, as musicvideos usually have lip syncing through out.Various lip syncing shots from Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’The one shot of lip syncing from myMusic video.
  11. 11. MISEN SCENEThe mis en scene could be considered one of the most important characteristics of amusic video. In the case of my music video, my mis en scene comes from the narrativethat I have created, therefore my mis en scene does not develop from a real media text.My music video was set in a park and a home, as this is what my target audience thoughtwas appropriate for the music video content. The props that I used were also seen asappropriate for the video content.
  12. 12. CAMERAANGLES/SHOTSCamera angles and shots can be seen as a crucial convention of a music video, showing characters emotions and feelings or even social standing in society. IHave used a variety of shots in my music video such as long shots, mid shotsAnd close ups.Close-upsEXAMPLESimilar shotsused in Madonna’svideo.
  13. 13. INTERTEXTUALITYIntertextuality refers to the relationship that exists between different texts, with inmedia this refers to different types of media. I chose to use intertextuality within mymusic video. In the beginning of my music video Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ is playing andthen paused through an iPhone before Vince Kidd’s version begins. I also used the sametype of text from Kanye West’s ‘All of the Lights’ music video at the end over theanimation. The definition at the beginning of the music video is taken from Beyonce’smusic video ‘Diva’.
