Social Issue
Food Waste
On average, about one-third of food produced is lost or wasted globally (as per the un
food and agriculture organization). According to UN estimates, 40 percent of the food
produced in india is either lost or wasted. This food wastage however, isn’t limited to
one level alone but perforates through every stage; from harvesting, processing,
packaging, and transporting to the end stage of consumption. The wasted food is safe, in
date and edible, but isn’t used by major retailers for many reasons, including damaged
packaging and over-ordering.
Malnutrition
Every day, more than 6,000 children below the age of five die in India. More than half
of these deaths are caused by malnutrition-mainly the lack of Vitamin A, iron, iodine,
2. zinc and folic acid. About 57% of preschoolers and their mothers have
subclinical Vitamin A deficiency.
Product/Service to be provide
‘Social supermarkets’ reduce this food waste by selling this ‘waste’ stock at low prices to local
people on low incomes who are struggling with food poverty. The aim of the social supermarkets
is to improve food access for residents of low incomes membership to work on an improvement
plan tailored to their individual needs. Collect unsellable Food and products from Food Supplier
or supermarket and Sell products at a low prices.
A social supermarket is selling some of the edible food that would have been junked by the
bigger names to those struggling to afford to feed their families. It may look like a normal
supermarket, but the prices are cheaper. The employees are Single mothers, women’s from low
income families. Now in the Current situation the vegetables and fruits are highly price so the
low income people are not able to consume were they cannot offer vegetables and fruits for high
price. So it is lead to nutrition deficiency.
These are few countries where social super market concept was followed by them:
In France, it is mandatory for supermarkets to donate unsold food items to charity or
farmers to convert them into fertilizers.
Canada recovers unused food items from manufacturers, retailers, restaurants, etc. And
delivers these food ingredients to be used to cook over 22,000 meals every day.
Sweden implemented a recycling revolution, wherein less than 1% of household waste ends
up in landfills and of the 4.4 million tons of household waste produced every year, 2.2
million is converted into energy.
Food waste is impacting our environment in several ways and in a way impacting us too and it is
time we work towards it.
P.D. Hinduja hospital Mumbai & MRC are trying best to deal with the situation by giving all our
left-over food to an NGO called ROTI, which not only lessen food waste but also gives us
mental satisfaction that our food is being used to feed hungry people.
