Eastenders is a British soap opera that has been airing for over 30 years. It focuses on the lives of the families living in the fictional London borough of Walford. Each episode begins with a catchy theme song that plays over a map zooming into East London to grab the audience's attention. The stories in the first episode shown involve Peggy Mitchell being upset over a newspaper article about her nieces, and tensions between Ian, Jane, and Tanya. Through dramatic family storylines and performances, the show aims to relate to viewers and keep them engaged from the start of each episode.
Programme for Taunton Thespians' production of Outside EdgeMike Gilbert
Richard Harris' Outside Edge is a very funny play indeed, and the director (for once) had a firm idea of the image for posters and programme cover, which took a while but works quite well. Typeface deliberately Eurostile for that 1970s feel I remembered from Letraset on the Plymouth Polytechnic magazine back then... Excellent photographs by Mark Dawson

Eastenders
Eastenders starts of with a loud catchy tune in Walford (Albert
square) to catch the audience’s attention meanwhile it is showing the
map of London, zoomed into East London. The theme tune creates
suspense as it starts and ends with the same music. The soap always
ends by leaving the audience wanting to see more.
It starts of with Peggy (Barbara) being depressed about the news
paper report. It’s a picture of her nieces Ronnie (Samantha) and
Roxy (Rita) getting arrested and the reporter wrote things about
family troubles. Mean while Jane (Laurie) is angry with Ian because
she thinks there is something going on between him and Tanya (Jo).
Jack (Scott) threatens Roxy to see Amy and tells Daniel (Lauren)
she is not allowed to baby sit Amy. The square isn’t the best place to
be this St Patricks day!
As every family faces trouble in life, the Mitchell family really relate
to the public and bring the rehearsed scene to life. The family are
always bound to make you seem insane by shouting at the TV and
advising it with unrequited speech! The director starts the show
straight into the action, making the audience ask questions. He
makes sure that the audience are interested as soon as they flick the
channel to 101.
In an episode like eastenders the camera acts as a narrator, leading us
through the story. Different camera shots are used for various
purposes. The camera shots used in eastenders are mid angled to fit
most the scene in, but occasionally uses of zoom and close ups
appear to draw the audience’s attention to an important factor of the
scene. For instance when two characters are having a shocking
conversation a close up of one of the characters face will be
deployed to show the emotion the character is experiencing. Another
example is when an important prop is being used which would
normally fit into the background and is then zoomed into to show the
audience.
The choice of colour that is used in eastenders can contribute to the
overall mood and atmosphere of an episode and add visual contrast

e.g. to make a character stand out or contribute to our understanding
of episode in action. The music that is used in eastenders can make
us bite our nails with suspense, laugh or cry.
I think eastenders doesn’t have any intended audience, it is for
anyone who wants to watch it, it is a soap that is being on for over
30 years and will hopefully be going for another 30years and more.
In my opinion I believe that Eastenders is a show that the family can
watch together it’s not the best soap on TV but its worth to watch.
The half hour episode shows a modern day life of people living
down East London with many troubles and concerns coming
towards them every day.
