The Central Challenge (300 points)
Procedure: In this Challenge, the team will prepare an original six-minute or less
Improvisational Skit in a 30-minute period at the Tournament immediately prior to
their Presentation time. The team will prepare the Skit in a room called a StuDIo. During
their preparation time in the StuDIo, the team will integrate five Improv Elements
into their Skit. When their 30-minute StuDIo time is over, the team will be taken to the
Presentation Site. At the Presentation Site, the team will select a sixth Improv Element
to be incorporated into their Skit and then begin the Presentation of their Skit to the
Appraisers and audience.
Skit:1.
The team will create and perform an original Improv Skit that integratesa. six
Improv Elements into a story about a Superstition and its Origin. The set-up
and Skit will be up to six minutes in length.
The Team must present their Skit using the styles of three selected Film Genres.b.
Only the three Film Genres listed on the Tournament Data Form will be scored.
Points will awarded for the originality and creativity of the Skit about ac.
Superstition and its Origin, effectiveness of integration of the selected Film
Genres, a clearly developed story, and how well the Improv elements are
integrated into the story.
Required Improv Elements:2. The following six Improv Elements must be included
in the team’s Skit:
Selected in the StuDIoa. : Before the 30-minute StuDIo time begins, the team
will randomly choose Improv Elements 1, 2 and 3. After the StuDIo time begins,
the team will create an original Skit integrating Improv Elements 1, 2 and 3 as
well as Improv Elements 4 and 5, which are generated by the team.
Improv Element 1b. : Film Genres
Improv Element 2• : Sleuth
Improv Element 3• : Superstition
Improv Element 4• : Origin of the Superstition
Improv Element 5• : Superstition Origin Detector
Selected at the Presentation Sitec. : Just prior to the team’s Presentation, the
team will select Improv Element 6. (See C.4.)
Improv Element 6• : Surprise!
Improv Element 1: Film Genres3.
Prior to the Tournament, the team will review the twelve differenta. Film Genres
listed in TABLE ONE and identify six (6) to research. The team will list the six
chosen Film Genres on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this
Challenge and bring it with them to the Tournament. The team must be
prepared to integrate research from any of the six Film Genres into their Skit.
In the StuDIo, but before the 30-minute StuDIo time begins, the team willb.
randomly select three of the six Film Genres they have researched to include in
this Skit. (See C.2.a for an explanation of the selection procedure.)
The three selected Film Genres mustc. Segue from one to the next. It will be the
team’s decision as to how the Film Genres Segue. The team will choose the
order in which they want to present the three Film Genres and list the order
on their Tournament Data Form. This is only to help the Appraisers know when
they will be presented. Only the three Film Genres selected in the StuDIo will
receive points for D.1.b and D.2.
The team will receive points for the creative presentation of their understandingd.
of each of the three selected Film Genres.
What is a film Genre?
Film Genre:
A Film Genre is a particular type or
category of film. For the purposes
of this Challenge, certain film
techniques have been included in
the table of Film Genres.
Segue:
To change from one Film Genre to
another with very little or no pause.

Sleuths on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge and
bring it with them to the Tournament. The team must be prepared to integrate
research for any of the six Sleuths into their Skit.
In the StuDIo, but before the 30-minute StuDIo time begins, the team willb.
randomly select one (1) of the six Sleuths to integrate into their Skit. (See C.2.b
for an explanation of the selection procedure.)This selected Sleuth must be the
only Sleuth from TABLE TWO that is included in the Skit.
The team will receive points for evidence of research demonstrated in thec.
Skit. This can be presented in any manner the team chooses. The team will
also receive points for the integration of the research into the portrayal of the
selected Sleuth in the Skit.

Improv Element 4: Origin of the Superstition6.
During their StuDIo time, the team will determine the Origin of the Superstition.a.
The Origin is team created and does not have to be the actual origin.
The team will receive points for the creativity of the team’s explanation of theb.
Superstition’s Origin. The team will also receive points for the integration of the
team’s explanation of the Superstition’s Origin into the Skit.
Improv Element 5: Superstition Origin Detector7.
Many great detectives have had new, innovative devices that helped them solve
their mysteries. Your team will build a technical device that will help determine the
Origin of the Superstition. The team will build a Superstition Origin Detector (SOD)
in the StuDIo, using the materials they have selected from TABLE THREE: Materials
List.
The SOD must move during the Skit. The movement must be visible to thea.
Appraisers. The team will receive points for the SOD moving. A team member
may not be the SOD.
If the SOD moves entirely under its own power, the team will earn points for theb.
creativity of the propulsion system that moves the SOD.
The team will receive points for the creative use of materials to assemble thec.
SOD, and the team will also receive points for how well the SOD contributes to
solving the mystery of the Origin of the Superstition.

that come at them without warning as they work to solve their cases. They may
discover a mysterious object that might be a clue, or they might find themselves
in an unexpected situation. The Surprise! element reflects the excitement of the
unexpected that a real sleuth experiences.
At the Presentation Site, the team will randomly select a Tournament-supplieda.
Surprise! They will have one minute to decide how to integrate the Surprise!
into their Skit. The Team may decide how long and in what way to integrate
their Surprise! but it must be long enough that the Appraisers are sure to see
that the team has integrated it into the Skit. Examples of different types of
Surprises a team might select are listed below.
Situation: A surprising turn of events, either positive or negative.i.
Example:“SITUATION: You discover a hidden treasure.”
Surprise Character: A random character you must integrate into the Skit.ii.
	 Example:“SURPRISE CHARACTER: A rock star.”
Characteristic: A personality trait or physical trait to be possessed by oneiii.
character in the Skit.
Example: “CHARACTERISTIC: A sprained ankle” or “CHARACTERISTIC:
Always has the giggles”or“CHARACTERISTIC: Has X-ray vision.”
Invisible Prop: An item that is not physically present but must beiv.
incorporated into the Skit as if it were. The team must portray the Invisible
Prop in such a way that its characteristics are recognizable to the audience
and Appraisers.
	 Example:“INVISIBLE PROP: A high-heeled shoe.”

Teamwork:9. An entertaining Improvisational performance requires great
Teamwork!
Teamwork in the StuDIo is not scored, but while the team works in the StuDIo, aa.
StuDIo Supervisor will be present to provide the team with written comments
about their teamwork. These comments are given to the team when they
receive their Raw Score.
Teamwork in the Presentation IS scored. During the Presentation, the team willb.
receive points for the way the team members work together to move the story
along and improvise together as well as for a well integrated and executed
Overall Presentation.
Team-Provided items:10.
The team may select and bring any amount of materials from the list provided in
TABLE THREE into the StuDIo. However, all the materials the team chooses to bring
must fit inside ONE cardboard box no larger that 2ft. x 2ft. x 2ft. No items may
extend above the top of the box. If the items extend above the top of the box, the
Check-In Appraiser will ask the team to choose which items to remove to make all
items fit. The materials are to be used to create all costumes, props and other items
used in the team’s Presentation. (Note: The Tool Box in A.11.b does NOT have to fit
inside the box.)
The team members (not the Team Manager) must carry all of their items intoa.
the StuDIo, and to the Presentation Site from the StuDIo, in one trip. The team
must be able to move all of their items into the StuDIo and to the Presentation
Site quickly, without help from non-team members and without the use of
rolling carts or dollies.
All materials the team chooses to bring into the StuDIo must be carried to theb.
Presentation Site and onto the stage by the team. Teams will not be allowed to
leave any unused materials behind. When deciding what materials to bring to
the Tournament, the team must remember that their Team Manager will take
only the Tool Box (11.b) and research notes (11.c) to the Presentation Site after
the StuDIo time ends. The team must take all their materials on stage with
them. The box and the remaining materials may be incorporated into the Skit
in any manner.
Materials listed in TABLE THREE11. : The materials the team wishes to use will be
chosen prior to the Tournament. Points will be awarded for creative use of the
materials. Remember: It is not the creativity of the materials the team brings to the
Tournament, but rather the creativity of what the team does with the materials
that is awarded points!
The team may bring any amount of any of the items listed in TABLE THREE.a.
But all selected materials MUST FIT in a cardboard box that is 2ft. x 2ft. x 2ft.
or smaller. The box must fit into a 2ft. x 2ft. x 2ft. (61cm x 61cm x 61cm) pre-
measured pattern in the Check-In Area. All used and unused materials must
be completely removed from the entire Tournament Site after the team’s
Presentation. Teams must not expect the Tournament Director to dispose of
their leftover materials.
If any item includes a core or roll, it may also be used as the team desires.i.
All materials may be used in any way the team desires unless specified
differently in TABLE THREE. All materials brought to the StuDIo may be
new or used. They may not have any team-made enhancements, additions,
changes, or alterations. Any alterations to the materials must be done in the
StuDIo. NOTE: Any words and pictures already commercially printed on any
items are acceptable.

B. Special Rules for
Improvisational Challenges
Honoring the Intent of this Challenge1. : The intent of this Challenge is to create a
unique improvisational Skit based on the specific combination of Elements selected
attheTournament.PriortotheTournamentteamsareencouragedtoprepareforthe
many possible combinations of Improv Elements they may receive by generating
different scenarios, experimenting with the materials, creating potential characters,
and mixing and matching the various Improv Elements in practice sessions. It is
expected that teams will choose to use and include some of the ideas that come
fromtheirpracticesessionswhencombiningtheImprovElementschosenrandomly
at the Tournament into their unique Skit. As long as the team does not bring their
ideas for scenarios, potential characters, etc. into the StuDIo in written form, using
the ideas is acceptable and is in keeping with the intent of the Challenge.
If a team moves on to another level of Tournament and by chance selects one or
more of the same Elements, they are encouraged to create another original solution,
but no deduction will be taken if they reuse parts of an earlier solution.
www.IDODI.org  © 2008 Destination ImagiNation, Inc.  Challenge D: Private DI® 9
If a team or any individual team member chooses to take on this2. Team
Challenge, they may not register for any other Team Challenge. No member of
an Improv Team may participate on any other team in any Challenge, including
another Improv Challenge. There is one exception to this rule: University Level
teams competing at Global Finals MAY register for this Challenge and another.
Expense Report:3. No Expense Report form is required for this Challenge.
Clothing and Accessories4. :
All costumes must be created in the StuDIo.a.
Items of clothing worn by the team may not be removed in the StuDIo or onb.
stage or irreversibly altered for the Presentation. Layering of clothes is not
acceptable. All clothing must be able to be returned to its original condition
after the Presentation. All costumes are to be created in the StuDIo or on
stage.
Jewelry, hair accessories, watches, glasses, or items from the team members’c.
pockets may not be used as props or be incorporated in any manner in the
Presentation. Team members may wear wristwatches for time management in
the StuDIo. The wristwatch can be worn during the Presentation but it may
not be incorporated into the solution in any way. The only“official time”is that
kept by the StuDIo Supervisor or theTimekeeper/Announcer, and these official
times are final.
C. At the Tournament
StuDIo Check-In:1. The team will arrive at the StuDIo Check-In one hour before their
scheduled Presentation time. The Check-In Appraiser will check to see whether the
team has all the items needed.

which three Film Genres they will use, from the six they have listed on their
Tournament Data Form. For example, if the team rolls the number two, then the
Film Genre listed as number 2 on the Tournament Data Form will be one of the
three Film Genres the team must integrate in their Skit. The team will repeat
the selection process until three different Film Genres have been selected. If
the team rolls the same number as previously rolled, the team will continue
to roll the die until three different Film Genres have been selected. The team
may present the Film Genres in any order they choose, regardless of the order
in which they were rolled.
Selecting Improv Element 2: Sleuth:e. The team will roll a die to determine
which Sleuth they will use, from the six they have listed on their Tournament
Data Form.
Selecting Improv Element 3:The Superstition:f. The team will randomly draw
