In 1949, while many other parts of the world were embroiled in conflict, Tibet, an independent and peaceful nation, was invaded by Chinese military forces. This resulted in over 100,000 Tibetan deaths and the destruction of thousands of libraries and universities. The 14th Dalai Lama was forced into exile in India in 1959 along with 80,000 Tibetans. Since then, Tibetans have faced brutal oppression under Chinese rule, with their culture and language being suppressed. Today, Tibet continues to struggle for independence from Chinese occupation.
