Memphis Project Electronics Storage Box By: Aastha
AOI Approaches to learning: I have used ATL in this project because, before starting this project  I did not know what Memphis meant. I did not know what kind of project the teacher meant by Memphis, and now I learnt a new word, and researched about it.  Human Ingenuity: My project relates to human ingenuity because every step of the project from Investigation to Evaluation is done by me, especially because I am the one who was  making it, and creating it. All the ideas of the project were mine so I think it is related to this AOI.  Environment: My project is related to the Environment because we are using recyclable materials, and the wood I am using can be re grown. This shows how we are not wasting materials, and not cutting down new trees.   Health and Social Education: My project in related to HSE because in the process of making this project we have to be very careful with what tools we are using, we have to make sure we don’t hurt ourselves with the tools. For example, the disc sander, we have to make sure our hands are not very close to it so that we don’t sand our fingers. Also, the reason why we are wearing aprons is connected. We do not want our clothes to have any dirty stains on them. There is another rule of the DT workshop. When we enter it we should be wearing closed shoes (not flip flops or sandals) because we don’t want anything to fall on our legs and hurt us. This can problems as well. Also, while using power tools making sure that we have our safety goggles on is important, because we don’t want to hurt our eyes by letting anything go into is, such as dust.  Community and Service: I think that my project is connected to C&S because I am creating a storage box that suits teen aged girls, most likely I or my cousin’s will use it. I am making it so that people can store their valuables such as cameras, cell phones, or iPods inside.  I think this is important because if they store their electronics in one place they won’t lose it, because they would know where they put it. Also, girls like mirrors, and pictures, the photo frames will be a great place to put two of their special pictures in, also, girls like looking in the mirrors a lot, checking on how they look, so I think that it will be useful that they have a mirror sitting on the desk.
Learner Profile Reflective: For Design Technology class I am very reflective because after every lesson in my workshop I write my process journal. This is reflective because I write about what I am satisfied with and what I’m not satisfied with. Also, I get to talk about my mistakes, and my good areas, I talk about different tools I use and how I used them, and how I felt to be using them. I also talk about the different emotions.  Inquirer: I am an Inquirer in Design Technology class because when I don’t know what tool to use or how to use a certain tool, I always asked the teacher or look at another student using that tool, that way I can learn how to use the tool. Also, I ask for other people’s opinions so that I can improve the quality of my project.  Thinker: I am a thinker in Design Technology class because I think about my project. The way it will look, the person it is made for, the color scheme, etc. I think about how to write my process journal, and what format I should write it in. Also, I think about why I am making what I am making.  This is a picture of when I was painting the inside of my project. I think that I was being a thinker and an inquirer because I had to think of which color to paint it, and I had to Inquire about how it would look.
Impact on the User/Society/Environment I think that the impact on the User of my product will be a advantage impact. My product is made so that people can keep their electronic valuables in it. For example, their camera, cell phone, IPod, electronic dictionary, etc. Or they can keep other things in it that they want safely kept in one particular area. This way they will stay organized and they will not lose anything, or will not take a lot of time to find the thing they are looking for. Also, my product is very convenient. Reason being, it is portable; it doesn’t take up much space, and can be picked up easily; it is not heavy, this way people can move it around from one place to another.  Another very important thing about this product is that I made it mainly for girls my age, because it has mirrors and photo frames. However, it doesn’t have to be used by girls my age only, it can be used by people from any age. Old people might want to store their medication in one particular area, and this box will be very useful. Or woman who want to keep their make up together, they can put their cosmetics in this box, and while putting makeup they can look into the mirror. As for younger kids, boys can put their toy cars in here, and girls can use it to store their Barbie clothes, and use the mirror to see how Barbie looks.  Another good thing about this project is that it doesn’t harm the environment in any way. This project has been made with reusable wood. So basically, we haven’t been cutting down new tress just for this project, so this shows that I am being environmentally friendly. Also, it doesn’t take up much space so it will not cause a lot of problems. If it ever breaks or needs repair, we won’t need to rebuild the whole project we can just change a sections, or glue the section together, because it is not a very big thing.   Young or old all can use 
Overall I think that Design Technology class is vey interesting. During the whole year we have done a lot of things. We have looked at the color wheel, complementary colors, secondary colors etc. We have done different types of coloring, rendering, hatching, 3D effects, and light to dark. I think that learning about colors was very interesting, we learnt which colors contrast each other and which colors match each other, and which colors make up another color. I think that this was very useful information because we get to understand what colors we should use to make our projects stand out. Also, we have done the investigation. In this stage we had to research about what Memphis is, and different kinds of Memphis designs created by people. By doing this research I have learnt how to make my own Memphis project. There were some inspirations such as the colors that are used for my project. I think that it is important to do research because that way we get the whole basic idea of what we are actually supposed to be doing. And also, this way it makes our project feel more like we spent time working on it.  Another important part of my project was the design stage, this is the stage where I was supposed to brainstorm my different ideas of what I want to make. I had to draw different types of pictures of the different ideas I had. I think that this is important, because I get to chose from a large variety of different ideas.  The creating stage has been a great time. I have done a lot of work to make my project. I had to cut wood, glue, nail, paint, sand, etc. It has been a great experience. Because I didn’t know what Memphis was I thought that I wouldn’t do very good with my project, but while I started to research, I think that my project is completely Memphis and very original as well.  Overall I think that it has been a great year in Design Technology class, because I have learnt a lot of things, and I think that I would like to continue Design Technology next year as well.
