PROGRESSION!
Bassline had a lot more thought and research put into deciding the name. The name was decided from teenagers which we found out in my questionnaire and also cooperates itself within the magazine as a running house style and font unlike in the prelim task where it really just was there looking pretty and had no meaning behind why we chose that font ect.
The fonts have a better purpose now that we've learnt about house style and keeping it consistent. In the prelim task we really just choose a random font to place this quote on the page, but in our final product the font chosen is purposefully done so because its got a rock/indie look (which is our genre magazine) and also is a consistent font which is carried onto out contents page.
The prelim task shows a basic understanding of a photo as it was just a simple photo taken quickly, whereas I've learnt about framing and angles in the progression and have framed charlottes body into the cover and have based the contents around her . Also from learning about appealing to the audience I learnt that I need a strong bold photo to catch the readers eyes and is why charlottes picture is clean and polished with lighting to bring out her features.
I've also learnt that the magazine needs to flow more and be kind on the readers eyes. With a simple layout and not being too overflowed I think my final product is more appealing and effective with its colours to addressing and attracting the audience . It also flows better as you have a reading direction from the heading following underneath to information inside the magazine to following the lead down to the main stories and then along the jack to the amp where the brand identity is reinforced and the price, barcode and date is given. It flows better and works more effectively that placing barcodes and so forth in places that are spare.
I've learnt that a consistent house style was needed through out which is why the fonts are carried through . From the prelim task the icons were random and weren't actually thought about. I learnt that its important to be consistent and carry things through so that your audience can recognise the house style and know what magazine they are reading which is why the amp background for the contents page is the same as the one from the front cover and all our colours are carried through from the blues to greens to whites to blacks and reds.
I also learnt that the simpler the better. From the prelim task its got quite a lot of information and when you first look at it you wouldn't really know were to start to read. But I have progressed from that and in the final product show a better understanding as there is less information and its simpler for the reader as its some information and then merges to a picture and then merges back to some information and then onto another picture.
We didn't have to do a double page spread in the prelim task however I still learnt a lot about the construction and I progressed through this in my final task. At first the main idea was that a lot of artists lyrics and songs start off on random scraps of paper and whilst sitting in a restaurant or eating dinner they'll suddenly think of words and scribble it down on paper. In our original Dps we used a handwriting font to resemble the scribbled lyrics and then random scraps of paper, post its and napkins with the writing copy on. We wanted to stick with the colour theme of rock colours like white and red and quickly picked up on the table cloth. However after placing this all together and presenting it to people we soon realised it did not fit, at all! It looked like our front cover and contents page was from a total different magazine to our double page spread. Although I think it was right in keeping the typical rock colours I think we should have used them more carefully and effectively. After gaining feedback and talking it through I learnt that we needed to carry on the theme and house style again and so used the amp again as the background. I think this works successfully as the front cover, contents page and double page spread consists of the amp and is now a very recognisable part of the magazine which would be remembered by the readers. We also decided that the colours needed to be continuous as so kept the white and green colours for our writing copy. I think this works better than our previous dps as it was more consistent and all the conventions and parts worked together better. From the progression I learnt that the reading direction is extremely important for the reader to know where to start reading and where to finish. In our previous dps I don't think we brought this through successfully and it wasn't obvious about where to read and was clattered. After learning from this mistake, we decided to go with the traditional columns like other rock magazines did. Alongside our major photo of individual artists it worked effectively as you are drawn to the photo and would want to start reading from there which is what we intended this layout to do. Also all the magazine articles have quotes extracted from the text and so in the new construction of the dps we incorporated this and I think it gave the dps more edge and more traditional format style of a magazine that would be recognisable to readers.
