Music Video Analysis
1. In our video, we had the idea to challenge typical codes and conventions in Indie videos, we
wanted the video to also have a fragmented storyline and for the audience to be confused and
unsure to what was going on at the same time as the characters.
Within the first few shots of the video we wanted to set a sense of mystery, giving the audience
a sense of something not being quite right at the beginning of the video. We show the audience
shots of her getting dressed/ ready to leave the house. We focused on these particular items as
they show the audience the type of person the girl is. Showing the audience the animal print
cardigan, gives the audience idea that this girl is predatory in the way that she goes to find her
perfect man. This also shows that she is open about her sexuality, and can easily move from
one boy to another almost as if it is a journey. This idea of a journey fits with the idea of the
video that we are going to see the girl go on to find her perfect boy. We show the audience
different parts of her and her life and do not show her face until later in this section, this leaves
a sense of secrecy about the girl and what could possibly happen during this story. Integrating
the post-modern ideas that create a sense of twisted reality, which is important in our video.
We know that the character is a girl and shows that she is very feminine and again shows that
she is comfortable with her sexuality, we know this because of the pink room and
surroundings. Using the colour pink is important, as it is similar to our main colour, which is
red and used throughout the music video.
We are also shown a shot of the doll this tells the audience that this is important as it focuses
on the doll, and the use of a doll connotates the idea that something is not quite right about the
girl and storyline of the video. The doll that is dressed in red again shows the audience the
motif and we should look out for the colour in the video. Our motif of the doll is evident
throughout the whole of the video but during the first few scenes we hope that it isn’t too
obvious to what is happening and as the story develops the doll featured more and more in our
video.
The next few shots of her leaving the house, we used a range of shots to help the audience feel
that we are following her journey but we are not shown were she is going again creating a
sense of mystery about this character. We now see the girl in the animal print cardigan and
whilst following her in this journey it gives the audience an even stronger idea that her
character is predatory. The movement of the character emphasises this as she is quick and
seems to know where she is doing in contrast to the audience that does not know what is
happening. As she is walking down the street the use of our second motif becomes clear, the
colour red, as she walks down the street we see a cars, leaves, piping on her bag and the
pavement all of which are red. These objects surround her and as the colour red represents
danger, it gives the idea that danger surrounds her and she is dangerous.
We follow the girl to the park were she sets herself up to find her “prey” we used this setting as
we thought it fitted with the girls wild and predatory nature and using a big sunny park looks
like it could almost be a safari park. Using a over the shoulder shot it shows the audience more
about her interest in dolls as we see the book where as anyone one in the video will not see
what she’s reading. In the video the girl sees a boy that she finds suitable for her next
“victim”, the audience at this point should notice that she immediately likes him as we use a
close up to show intimacy. Using this shot often shows emotion as if we are getting to the
2. character more. As they make eye contact and notice each other the band sing “put those
thoughts away” we know that she is doing this as she pushes something down into her bag
again making her character more secretive and mysterious.
Once the two characters have met, the audience will immediately notice that there will be a
typical love story developing, the shots used show the chemistry between the two characters
and how they get on with each other. The story develops as he gives her his number, showing
that she is keen on him and wants to pursue with this adventure. The audience is always
involved with the relationship and they learn about the relationship between the characters as it
happens for them. We are aware that they are couple as they do typically romantics things that
couples do such as: going for a picnic, flirting, going to the park, watching the TV/ going to
each other's houses, holding hands and having a meal together. Fitting the typical ideas about
the bands music and having a romantic theme, along with the romantic story. The relationship
appears to be going well and like a real loving relationship. However whilst these things are
happening we notice a flaw in the relationship that the girl has with the boy, the story has
another story within it this is called a fragmented narrative, we are aware that girl is cutting up
pictures this again fits with the theme of the video being mysterious and on edge. One
important shot is a close up shown of the girl and boy holding hands this fits with the songs
title of one hand holding and also the use of the close up shows the intimacy between the two
characters.
The relationship between the two characters grows and develops so does this other relationship
between the girl and the doll, but we are never sure what is going on this creates an enigma for
the audience.
The whole lighting of the last scenes of the video are different to the rest of the video as they
have a pink/red tones to them, fitting with the motif of the colour red and what it portrays. We
first come across the use of red tones in the low lighting when the boy is coming up the stairs
using this lighting shows the audience what he could possibly be about to face, danger. To fit
with our theme of possible danger at this point we used a hand held camera to show how he
could be feeling and it allows the audience to feel what he is feeling too. Using a handheld
camera gives the suggestion that he is feeling scared, unsure and concerned. As he goes further
into the room he goes towards the bed with concern as a medium close up is shown of books
on the bed about dolls and then also a shot of the doll. The doll is placed on a heart shaped
cushion symbolic of the love she may have for the doll, he boys movement during these shots
show the audience that he has realised that something is not right and that he feels
uncomfortable. At this point in the video, it sings “the eyes, the eyes” and we are shown a
close up of the dolls face and the eyes of doll. Linking the song to the video at certain points of
the video makes it seem like reality and this creates a sense of fear for the boy and
apprehension for the audience.
As he picks up the doll with great confusion the cupboard starts to move, this again startles him
and we can see by body language and his facial expressions he is confused and worried. He
then notices the wall in front of him with all the pictures of the girl and the doll; the audience
had been shown the development of the making of this wall throughout the story. It then
becomes clear to the audience what has been happening, we see the likeness between the boy
and the doll and their relationship. This point it is very clear to him what is happening as we
3. can tell by his facial expressions and his memory is jolted to things that have happened in the
relationship by the use of flashbacks. The audience have always been aware of something not
right about this character, he sees the doll and realises that he is the doll. Flashbacks are used to
create the idea of things being manic and surreal. They also show him realising everything
about their relationship and how quickly it happens and how quickly he realises it all. Using
flashbacks and quick shots mean that the audience gets a good idea of what is happening
without it becoming two confusing.
The wardrobe moves again this time after realising what has been happening he goes to
explore, when he opens the door he comes across boys in the same clothes and looks. This tells
the audience and the boy that he is not the first person that this has happened too, before he can
try to escape the girl pushes him in the cupboard with the rest of the boys. During this shot, we
focused light onto the boys to show the importance of what is happening and to show their
innocence of the situation in comparison the low lighting that is used when the girl pushes the
boy into the cupboard.
Fade in is then used at this point to show a high lit shot of the cupboard portraying that it is a
new day and like a “fresh clean slate”. We are then shown shots of her in the same routine and
the same clothes going to find her next victim, the last shot we are shown are of her saying “hi”
to the camera like she has found her next victim and as if it were a circle.
