Case Study
Greenwich Leisure Limited – Kings Hedges Learner Pool
“energyTEAM provide completely independent support
in the renewables sector and it was this independence
that gave us confidence to incorporate renewable
solutions within our business model.
energyTEAM were subsequently able to procure and
manage the successful installation of the required
solutions for our business."
Energy & Environment Manager
Greenwich Leisure Limited
GLL was competing for the contract to operate a
number of leisure services on behalf of Cambridge City
Council.
Ongoing running costs were a key consideration in the
competitiveness of their bid, so GLL were looking for
new opportunities which could reduce energy
consumption and costs, as well as reduce the
environmental impact of the site operations.
To explore the opportunities and viability of including
renewable energy solutions as part of their tender bid,
GLL appointed energyTEAM to undertake scoping
studies across a number of sites with the aim of
identifying practical solutions (along with key
investment details such as investment, financial
payback, energy saving and carbon reduction).
These studies identified a number of renewable energy
opportunities across a number of sites, including:
Kings Hedges Learner Pool: Heat Pump
Installation for pool water heating.
Cherry Hinton Village Leisure Centre: Solar
PV Installation for on-site electricity generation.
Projects offering practical solutions, good energy
savings and an attractive payback were then selected
to be included within their tender submission.
Having been successful in winning the contract to
operate leisure services on behalf of Cambridge City
Council, GLL commissioned energyTEAM to manage
the procurement and installation of a number of
renewable energy projects; including the heat pump
installation at Kings Hedges Learner Pool.
At Kings Hedges, the pool water had always been
heated by an electric boiler, which whilst proving
suitable over many years, was an expensive way of
heating, generating high carbon emissions.
This project has seen the installation of two NIBE air
source heat pumps to provide the pool water heating,
with the electric water boiler being retained only for
emergency backup requirements.
This renewable energy project has allowed GLL’s
Kings Hedges Learner Pool to gain:
Heating throughout the pool from use of
renewable technology.
A Carbon Saving of 9.7 tonnes per year.
A Payback Period of 2.5 - 3.5 years.
