Making Native Browser Games in The Modern AgeCatt Small
When Flash fell out of popularity due to lack of mobile support, it left small game makers with a big question – use outdated technology and miss out on the shift to mobile, or make mobile-only games and forget the browser? Gladly, thanks to JavaScript game development frameworks like Phaser, we no longer have to choose. In this talk, I discussed the pros and cons of making games using JavaScript, the basic concepts behind Phaser (my tool of choice), as well as how to go beyond the browser and package JavaScript games for other platforms.
Best And Worst Practices Building Ria with Adobe and MicrosoftJosh Holmes
Come listen to leading Rich Internet Applications (RIA) experts from Microsoft and Adobe discuss many of the best and worst practices when building RIAs. RIAs provide a similar user experience to traditional desktop applications combined with the ease of deployment of web/browser based applications. This produces a fair amount of confusion because there are a number of potentially conflicting practices depending on whether you approach your RIA as a desktop or a web application. This session dives into the definition of RIA and walks through the best and worst practices that have appeared over and over again. We will explore architectural patterns and practices such as state management, fault tolerance, service composition, communications protocols and message formats and goes into details on how RIAs can be developed using runtime environments such as Adobe AIR or Microsoft Silverlight.

Most companies working on HTML5 for games talk only about the cross-platform advantages of HTML5. For Non-Stop Games and the game Dollar Isle the cross-platform aspect is only a bonus - there are many other killer benefits. This session will run through the development of the social virtual world Dollar Isle (www.dollarisle.com) and how HTML5 allows a new sort of distribution titled "Game as a Link". This disruptive distribution model can dramatically improve the virality of a game and also decrease customer acquisition costs.
