Overview of Experience in The People’s Republic of China
I have been fortunate to have worked and traveled extensively in the China for more than 13 years, working with
many Chinese business professionals, attorneys, and government officials in various industries including the
technology, avionics, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical sectors. I believe strongly in win-win relationships and
building partnerships to maximize each party’s mutual benefit. I have been extremely successful in helping a
variety of companies achieve their goals in China in a beneficial, efficient, and timely manner.
I have also developed a love and passion for Chinese culture, including business practices and methods. Based
on this experience, I have taught seminars and classes on Chinese/Asian business practices and law at Arizona
State University, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and the Thunderbird American Graduate School of
Management.
During my professional career,I have helped to successfully establish and maintain operations and profitability
of a variety of foreign investment enterprises (FIEs) including:
Wholly Foreign Owned Entities (WFOE)
Equity Joint Ventures (EJV)
Contractual Joint Ventures (CJV)
Representative Offices
Many of my Chinese business and law experiences have been in the high-tech and manufacturing sector in such
cities and provinces as: Beijing, Tianjin, Heibei, Hunan, Guangdong, and Hong Kong. I have also had experience
in processing and assembly relationships (lai lio jia gong) and import processing relationships (jin liaojia gong).
From a business and operations perspective, I have worked on and led teams responsible for modifying existing
manufacturing facilities and also establishing “greenfield” plants and facilities. The greenfield projects were
complete turnkey facilities where I worked on (a)acquiring the land, (b) working with the generalcontractor (both
Chinese and foreign contractors)and subcontractorsto build the factory,(c)ordering and importing the equipment,
(d) hiring employees (through FESCO), and (e) working with local authorities to ensure that power, water, and
sanitation were provided to the factory. Once the facilities were set up, I continued to work with local general
managers and employees to resolve business and legal issues as they arose.
An example of a “greenfield” manufacturing plant I helped set up was a 65,000-square foot LCD design and
manufacturing facility including a Class10,000 clean room. This facility wasbuilt and operated in the Changping
sci-tech zone in DongXiaoKou Township.
I have worked extensively in negotiating contracts and maintaining ongoing relationships with many Chinese
companies including China Display Limited, Beijing Ericsson Communication Systems Co. Ltd, Motorola China,
Heibei Jiya Electronics Co., Potomac International, Bank of China, China Telecom, Shanghai Electric, Shenzen
KTC Technology Company, Varitronix Inc., and Shenzen Kaifa.
In the direct sales industry, I have initiated and led direct sales license (and Blue Cap) application efforts (in
China) for U.S. companies to conduct direct sales business in China.
In addition, I have worked extensively with various Chinese government agenciesand licensing bureausincluding
MOFCOM, SAIC, SAFE, CIETAC, MII, SIPO, and various city and provincial planning and development
commissions.
On a personal level, in 2005 my wife and I adopted a beautiful Chinese girl (named Zhao Hong En) from Yuan
Ling in the Hunan Province.
