- When a teach can understand why the behavior is taking place, teachers can have a plan to prevent it from taking placePower students misbehave because they want the teacher and everyone to know they have power and control. They are the students who resist and challenge. They are the students who will challenge the teachers in front of the class, argue with the teacher to show that they are in control, and cannot be controlled by othersRevenge They want to get even, they were wronged, embarrassed, especially in front of their peers. This could be tied into power. The teacher could have said something to them, not helped them, received a bad grade, teacher made a phone call home. Could be something that was done in a different class, teacher, or administratorAttention they want someone to pay attention to them, teacher or other students, they want to be heard, the want people looking at them. They need a platform to do this. These are the students who lets the whole class know they are done, need to sharpen a pencil, or go to the bathroom, these are the students who are making jokes, or comments to get other students and or the teacher to respond. When a teacher can begin to understand why certain behaviors are happening in class, they can be addressedTeachers need to focus on what they can control, looking at what a teacher can control, they can be ready and have a plan
- Reactive classroom is when a teacher has a set of consequences, they are just waiting for the students the students to misbehave so they can give a consequence. The teacher is expecting students to misbehave, it is like a gotcha, or teacher revenge on the students. When a teacher expects students to misbehave and has a system of consequences to give the students, it is going to lead to loss of instructional timeA teacher that is proactive with classroom management, the teacher is in control of when and how things happen in class. Even in a proactive classroom teachers will have a system of consequences, but they are not sitting back waiting for them to happen, so they can hand out the consequence. There are several things a teacher can do, to be ready and ultimately reduce these occurances and save valuable instructional time.
- Plan Plan ahead and be prepared, have procedures in place for the students, if there are undesirable behaviors, what is the plan to deal with it, teachers do not want to have to deal with them on the flyModel What you expect, students need to know what the expectations are, they need to be taught to the students, and teachers need to follow through with those expectations. If you want the students to class on time, the teacher needs to be on time, if you want the students to come to class with materials, the teacher needs to have materials readyRules that make sense Rules make sense to the students, the students will be more likely to follow them. Have rules and procedures that are specific, that the students can understand. A rule that says respect each other, do students know what respect means, it could mean different things to different people, rules that are connected to learning. Don’t use consequences connected to other content areas, push ups, writing. When they are used as consequences, students will see these content areas as something that is bad. If students believe that rules are not connected to content area they will try to challenge them. Treat Students with Dignity Students are young, they are going to make mistakes. When speaking to students don’t embarrass them, when this happens in front of their peers they are going to try to save-face. When a student is misbehaving other students in the class expect the teacher to be the teacher/adult, embarrassing the student in the class, the other students will look down upon the teacher and may even defend the student. When a student is late, they know they are late, it does not need to be a scene, this also may be to get attention in the classroom because the teacher called them out and now they are on the stage. This also applies when a student says they do not know what they did wrong, it is an attempt to get attention for longer. Avoid using negative comments or sarcasm when dealing with misbehavior in the classroom, don’t talk down to the students, try to talk them one-on-one if possibleRelationships Students work harder for teachers that they like, to prevent discipline problems in the classroom build relationships with the students, students are not going to misbehave for a teacher they like and students like teacher who care about them. Talk to the students, go to their sporting events, ask the students about their weekend, find out what the students like, ask them how they are doing in their other classes, show them that you care about them, more than just a student in your class. Don’t be afraid to share information about yourself with the students, let them see that you are a person that has interests alsoPraise catch the students being good and tell them. Teachers can praise the whole class, but has even more effect when teachers can do this individually. Students often get attention when they are off task, give the students attention when they are on task. When students are seeking attention and know that you give them attention for being good, you can get more of the students doing good. Don’t focus on the students misbehaving, don’t give them that platform for attention or the opportunity to show their power
