In looking at what sin is we began by reviewing why Jesus came then looked at a definition of sin, how sin flows from idolatry and that the end result is God is denied His glory. We finished by summarizing why we need Jesus adding our understanding of sin.

What is Sin?
Hamartia – archery term that means to “miss the mark”.
1 John 3:4
Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God.
10 Commandments
2. God’s Standard – The first two commandments
1. You must not have any other god but me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on
the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship
them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God,
What is it called when we break the first two commandments? Idolatry
We think of idols as things made of metal or stone or wood but the greatest idol we have is-
ourselves.
What is Idolatry?
Romans 1:25
They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather
than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
Idolatry is denying God His rightful place in your heart and life and seeking to be your own god
by making something else more important to your significance, purpose, and happiness than
God.
Sin and Idolatry are connected, all sin flows from idolatry
Martyn Lloyd Jones
“The essence of sin is to fail to glorify God.”
Romans 3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Isaiah 42:8
I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.
A Way of Understanding Why We Need Jesus
• The bad things you do show something is wrong.
• Just as having a fever, sore throat and a cough are symptoms that show something is
wrong inside you.
• The bad things you do show something is wrong with you in your heart.
• They show that you are spiritually dead – separated from God because of sin.
• You have bitten into Satan’s lies about God’s character, goodness and provision for you.
• You have turned from God to be your own god.
• You have rejected and rebelled against God and there are consequences for that if you
die physically without Jesus.
• You will stand before Him one day to be judged for your sin.
• If you are guilty of any sin you will be cast into Hell, the Lake of Fire.
• Where you will experience God’s righteous punishment for your sin for all eternity.
Last Word
Someone will pay the price for your sins. Will it be YOU or JESUS?
