Social Media Platform Users and Poor Eating Habits
9. Barbara Pina

Abstract
This study provides an analysis of the relation that exists on
social media users and the type of food that they consume. This
is has been an existing problem in society especially with the
fact that social media platforms advertise fast-moving foods and
target the millennial. Therefore, to get the exact impact that
these foods have on the people, secondary sources are used to
provide information about the relationship that exists between
eating habits and social media platforms. The present study
aims to unravel the relationship that exists between the social
media users and the unhealthy eating habits so that appropriate
measures can be put in place to ensure that the society adjusts
to the most appropriate way of life that would result in healthy
living. Therefore, besides the use of secondary sources, the
study will establish the negative effects of using social media
platforms on the food types that young adults consume. The
participants of this study shall be randomly collected young
adults using smartphones and their responses will be useful in
determining the impacts of social media on the types of food
that they consume.
Social Media Platform Users and Poor Eating Habits
Introduction
10. Technology advances have come at a precedent pace with the
world being made a global village such that all activities can be
interconnected throughout the world. Various sectors have
incorporated the use of these advances in information
technology to achieve their goals. The millennial has been the
most affected due to the incorporation of the use of information
technology in various sectors during their age. As a result, there
have been reports that the use of social media platforms has
often had impacts on the kind of food that these young adults
consume. For instance, some have argued that a millennial is
likely to eat vegetables and fruits just because he/she has seen
fellow social media users consuming the same. Therefore, this
research proposal will seek to authenticate the facts from this
narrative that indeed these young ones can easily be influenced
by the social media platforms.
This study will investigate the relation that exists between
unhealthy eating habits and social media platforms. Social
media platforms have become one of the major ways in which
people share information easily across various parts of the
world. As a result, social media has influenced the users in
various ways such as their social life, consumption habits, and
even financial habits. The present study thus seeks to establish
the relationship that exists between the social media users and
the unhealthy eating habits that they might acquire through the
use of these social media platforms.
Literature Review
The precedent pace in which information technology has
revolutionized the world into a global village has put most of
the researchers on the toss to research on the relationships that
exist between social media platforms and unhealthy eating
habits among the millennials. As a result, there has been
enormous documentation on this matter, with special emphasis
being made on the relationship that exists between the impacts
of social media users and unhealthy eating among the
millennials.
Neter & Melaman, in their study on the relation on social media
11. users and unhealthy eating habits that was conducted at Ruppin
Academic Center in which there was an overall collection of
data from the social media platforms. In this study, these
researchers stated that cravings for certain foods, size and even
appetite for certain foods are usually motivated by what people
see in various social media platforms. The study which
involved 165 participants indicates that indeed there is a
relationship between what people consume and what’s shared in
various social media platforms.
Similarly, Holmberg, (2017) in their study which was based on
the communication of food in social media platforms by
adolescents. Holmberg discovered that adolescents have
developed a culture of sharing the type of foods that they eat on
social media and this has resulted in both negative and positive
impacts on the eating habits of these young adults (Holmberg,
2017). The visual images shared on these social media
platforms have psychological impacts on the human brain thus
resulting in further impacts on the appetite that these people
have on the foods shared. Therefore, this is indeed evident that
the use of the sharing of the visual images has huge impacts on
the users who in this case are usually the millennial.
Besides, Qutteina & Nasrallah, (2019) conducted a study on the
relation between social media and the poor eating habits
exhibited by the Arabian women who were among the social
media users (Qutteina & Nasrallah, 2019). The study which was
conducted based on the users of Instagram, Twitter, Facebook,
and Snapchat indicates that users of Instagram are the most
affected individuals in the world. The authors highlighted how
the uses of these platforms have had a direct impact on the lives
of the millennial as their eating patterns change with the use of
these platforms.
Coyne, Padilla-Walker & Howard, (2013) also researched on the
emerging trends in the digital world and how the use of these
digital trends have affected the lives of the young adults in the
world. This study emphasized the study that was conducted on
the determination of the social media impacts on young adults.
12. In this regard, the study proved that the numerous exposures of
various food types indicate that there are negative and
unhealthy impacts that are realized from these practices on the
users (Coyne, Padilla-Walker & Howard, 2013).
Additionally, Hoogstins, (2017) in his Journal the Modeling on
Social Media researched the influence that the use of social
media platforms has on the choices of food among the users of
these social media platforms (Hoogstins, 2017). However,
unlike the previous sources, this study which involved exposing
various food types on the participants' online platforms did not
have an impact on the decision making when it came to the
selection of the food of their choice. Therefore, this study
indicated that indeed no relation exists between social media
platforms and unhealthy eating habits.
Research Methodology
This study aims at establishing the relation that’s between
social media users and the poor habits of eating that they
exhibit. The answers obtained in this study will thus help
manage this emerging issue in society. This is because
unhealthy eating habits among young adults have farther
devastating effects to their lifestyles. We shall use open-ended
questionnaires that would design with specific questions
targeting the young adults using various social media platforms.
There shall also be the use of email open-ended questionnaires
that would target masses at the smallest time possible. These
questionnaires will also be accompanied by a description of the
anonymity of the research in which the respondents will be
handled with the confidentiality they deserve hence making it
effective in giving out the data.
Design
The first question will be asked on the most used social media
platform among social media users. This question will help us
understand the most used social media platform and how it
eventually affects the users. The second question will ask how
the use of these social media platforms that involve the sharing
of food images affects their food selection. In this regard, the
13. responses would be able to provide a clear picture of how the
use of these social media platforms affects their food
consumption habits.
Besides that, there shall also be the use of secondary sources in
the determination of the historical impacts that have been
recorded on the relations on social media platforms and poor
eating habits. In this regard, the data shall be obtained by the
use of efficient search engines such as PubMed and Google
Scholar in which such relevant data shall be done by the use of
keywords such as social media platforms, unhealthy eating
habits, and relationships that exists between them. The sources
shall then be narrowed to by using the most recent uses.
Participants
This study shall target young adults as the main persons of
interest. Therefore, we shall use university students and
individuals that have just completed learning and settled in their
careers hence have their own money and can make personal
decisions based on the money they have and the people they are
connected to.
Results
The results from this study will indicate that indeed there is a
close relation that exists between social media users and
unhealthy eating habits. In this regard, the results show that
there is an increase in unhealthy eating habits among the
millennials because they share these foods from their peers and
tend to copy from them.
Discussion
This is an area that requires an emphasis on study due to the
increased cases of obesity and overweight. This study will
display the relationship that exists between the social media
users and the unhealthy eating habits. However, despite this
study basing on the relationship of social media and unhealthy
eating habits, there is also a need to relate other factors and
unhealthy eating habits that might have been ignored and not
captured in this study. Therefore, this study has just provided
some of the most probable ways in which millennials are
14. encouraging amongst themselves leading to obesity and
overweight cases in the world.
