3. Put simply, Eco-Thaw is a liquid solution for
managing winter surfaces
Whereas we always tend to think of rock salt as
the only way to cope during the winter grind,
Eco-Thaw is a refreshing and cost effective
alternative
It’s not new – the principles of Eco-Thaw have
been in use for years
4. The basic requirement of managing any slippery
surface due to ice and snow is to ‘stop any
moisture from freezing.’
The art is to reduce the freezing point on the
ground so as to prevent the formation of ice.
If this can be achieved, the next step is to prevent
any bonding between the surface and ice to
enable quick clearance.
5. In short, rock salt reduces the freezing point of water.
Rock salt does not work unless it becomes a solution
Moisture in the form of humidity, dew, rain, ground
water or any dampness will break down salt
Salt works down to -10°C at its optimum ratio of 23%
of a compound solution
For working practice, rock salt will work at a low of -
7°C effectively allowing for further dilution
6. Essentially, nothing! Salt still works but over the
last three winters, temperatures have plunged
below -20°C and been consistently in a range
where salt is less effective.
Rock salt is not pure salt. An average of 10%
impurities are down to clays and grit that make
the after effects of salt application so messy.
Even from it’s own characteristics, salt is
corrosive and often harmful to any vegetation or
animal life it comes into contact with.
It is also very bulky and handling/storage is a big
consideration.
7. You need 20-40g/m2 of salt to work but the
majority is either blown, washed or tracked away
As the salt disappears, it needs constant re-
application to maintain effectiveness.
The traditional methods of salt application adopt
a scatter approach that tends to high wastage
and low levels of targeted surface treatment
8. Eco-Thaw is an 100% environmentally friendly
solution that acts to reduce the freezing point of
any moisture it comes in touch with
Eco-Thaw is available in 2 formats..
1. As a pre-treatment solution for surfaces
before the cold weather hits – we call this
2. As a de-icer to de-laminate compacted ice
and snow – this is called
10. Bluntly, Eco-Thaw can be used almost
anywhere!
Most commonly, it has been used on
walkways, roads, pedestrian areas, hard
standings, steps, station platforms, animal
arenas and more.
It has proved most effective in small to
medium size facilities where constant, safe
access is vital at all times
11. Being liquid, Eco-Thaw is normally applied with
typical spray equipment such as walk-behind
applicators, ATV attachments, or stand-alone
systems to suit any application, project size or
budget.
The tried, tested and available application
option available with Eco-Thaw is the EcoForce
III
Eco-Thaw is often used as a pre-treatment for
rock salt on bulk applications to improve
usability and ground life.
12. ECO-THAW Plus
As an anti-icer, Eco-Thaw need
only be applied at a rate of
12ml/m2, normally in a mist spray
application.
ECO-THAW Maxx
As a de-icer for de-laminating
compacted ice, Eco-thaw should
be jet applied at a rate of 18ml/m2
13. Eco-Thaw works at lower temperatures….. It will
continue to work down at temperatures as low as -
20°C.
Eco-Thaw lands where you put it….avoiding any
potential damage caused by over-scatter and
reducing wastage through over-application
Eco-Thaw lasts longer on the ground…..leaving a
residual, making for far fewer applications.
Eco-Thaw is clean……with no adverse effect on
vegetation, corrosive side effects or messy residuals
Eco-Thaw is effective…..as a de-icer it will de-bond
ice quickly and effectively to make way for simple
removal
14. Salt is a non-renewable resource and is no longer as
cheap or as available
When they ran out of salt in 2011……they used grit. The
damage to the nations surfaces is extensive, something
there is not the budgets in place to repair
Whatever salt was around, was impounded by the
government for essential services.
Eco-Thaw doesn’t stop snow falling, it doesn’t stop snow
laying or even remove it as if by magic….but it does stop
it bonding with the surface.
With salt, the increase of moisture from snow reduces
the salt concentrate and makes freezing and bonding
many times more likely.
15. A spokesman for the AA said: “We have just
endured one of the coldest winters on record and
clearly the difficulties of normal salt treatment have
been exposed at these much lower temperatures.
This will be another useful weapon in the armoury
against the severe winter and in that respect it has
got to be welcomed.”
Transport Minister Keith Brown – “Last month we
faced an unprecedented situation with the coldest
weather for 100 years, and it’s right we explore ways
of improving our capacity to respond to severe
weather. This is one of the first times this treatment
has been used on the Scottish road network and it is
encouraging to see positive early results. We will
continue to explore innovative ways of keeping our
transport networks moving and Scotland open for
business.”
