A PhD, Gary Russi served two decades at Oakland University. Retiring in 2013, he left
a lasting legacy, which includes construction of the university’s first medical park as
well as the transition of the university into a Division I school.
3. Oakland University’s Division I Status
There are 347 Division I schools across the nation. The institutions range from private
colleges to large public universities. Covering all types of sports, including football,
baseball, and gymnastics, a Division I school must sponsor a minimum of seven
sports for men and women each. Of the sports programs, each gender must have two
sports in which they can compete during each season .
