2. For nearly 20 years, Oakland University president Gary
Russi, PhD, worked to strengthen the school's
community, academics, and facilities. Dr. Gary Russi
led the addition of 1.2 million square feet of new
educational space, including a state-of-the-art
engineering building.
In 2012, Oakland University broke ground on a new
engineering center to house its School of Engineering
and Computer Science. The 127,000-square-foot
facility arose in response to a burgeoning of interest
in the school's engineering program, which saw a 20
percent increase in undergraduate enrollment in the
year the center broke ground.
3. Construction on the facility began shortly after the
university opened its Human Health Building, the
fourth new university building added to the campus
in a span of only 13 years.
Opened just under two years after ground was first
broken, the engineering center features laboratories
with the latest equipment in addition to classrooms,
faculty offices, and student meeting space, all of
which combine into a facility that encourages
innovative research and industrial advances. The
building has also inspired the Oakland University
community with its unique architecture, which has
inspired numerous photographs on such social media
sites as Instagram and Twitter.
