Baylee, In Robert Frost's poem, "Acquainted with the Night" he uses symbolism to compare darkness with depression. "I have been one acquainted with the night," (711) is the first line. It sets the tone of the story, along with the setting. He uses darkness as a symbolism for depression and sadness. "I have outwalked the furthest city light," (711) symbolizes him outwalking the last bit of light in his life. He is walking into the darkness of depression and walking out of the last bit of light that's left. There is no light left in his life, at least the aspect of a community type scene. He often uses the word aquatinted. This can also be interpreted as symbolism because the definition of an acquaintance is someone who you are briefly and merely accustomed to, who we wouldn't quite call a friend. The darkness is his acquaintance, he is not friendly and open to this darkness because the darkness is his depressive state. "Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right, I have been one acquainted with the night," (711) is a powerful line. It ties all the symbolism together. Frost is telling us that the timing is never right for depression. It comes at its own pace and at it's own time. Symbolism is a powerful element in literature and makes the reader think deeper about the true meaning of the poem. Beauty, Effort, and Misrepresentation: How Beauty Work Affects Judgments of Moral Character and Consumer Preferences ADRIANA SAMPER LINYUN W. YANG MICHELLE E. DANIELS Women engage in a variety of beauty practices, or “beauty work,” to enhance their physical appearance, such as applying cosmetics, tanning, or exercising. Although the rewards of physical attractiveness are well documented, perceptions of both the women who engage in efforts to enhance their appearance and the high-effort beauty products marketed to them are not well understood. Across seven studies, we demonstrate that consumers judge women who engage in certain types of extensive beauty work as possessing poorer moral character. These judgments occur only for effortful beauty work perceived as transformative (significantly altering appearance) and transient (lasting a relatively short time), such that they emerge within cosmetics and tanning, yet not skincare or exercise. This effect is mediated by the perception that putting high effort into one’s appearance signals a willingness to misrepresent one’s true self, and translates into lower purchase intentions for higher-effort cosmetics. We identify several boundary conditions, including the attractiveness of the woman performing the beauty work and whether the effort is at- tributed to external norms or causes. In examining how beauty work elicits moral judgments, we also shed light on why effortful cosmetic use is viewed negatively, yet effortful products continue to be commercially successful. The story in itself is sad. Nothing about an old woman who is so lonely watching other people for entertainment is happy whatsoever. However, Brim uses the characterization and description of events to show us the pain and despair of how having seemingly no-one can affect a person. The tone in the beginning starts off a little bit on edge as she goes through frustration, which is later developed to an disagreement. The situation becomes more hostile towards the middle of the story. The narrator mentioned " Son of a bitch! I'm so glad you're leaving! She began to cry. You can't even look me in the face, can you" (277)? This moment basically describes a moment of sadness for this women as she goes through a moment of separation from her significant other. In her sense, this could also be a use of diction because she tells him to leave but cries afterwards as if she doesn't really mean for him to leave, she is just upset. The tone the narrator uses in this story is major hostile disagreements between our characters. Later the narrator developed a statement, "I want the baby, he said. Are you crazy? No, but I want the baby. I'll get someone to come by for his things" (277). This statement proves that our characters continues to disagree with each other as they begin to debate on who will get custody for their child.
