Wallander Opening 
Sequence Analysis
sound 
• There is an airy music at the start of 
the film. 
• When the 2 girls walk through the 
empty field they are heavily 
breathing. This makes the audience 
wonder what have they been doing 
that has raised their heart beat to an 
extreme level. 
• There is an stink when one of the girl 
drops the knife in the empty ground. 
Mise-en scene 
• The two female characters look 
ghetto in the way they are dressed . 
For example, the hoodie and the 
outfits in total. 
• The blade on Sonia's neck makes the 
audience think she is dangerous. 
• The style both Sonia and the 
inspector talk have an major 
comparison. where Sonia seems to 
talk short sentences and in a ghetto 
like language . Where the policeman/ 
investigator speaks in a professional 
manner and calm tone. 
• In the start of the movie the 
audience is introduced to the 
location and we can see that it is set 
in England in the countryside
Editing 
• Various shot reverse shot is used as they are 
a lot of conversations are taking place. This is 
done to ensure the audience does not get 
confused in who is talking to who . 
• There is a cross cutting when the police man 
gets out the car this is to show what 
emotions the two female characters have 
towards the police officer . However in this 
case they kept calm and the face expressions 
did not change. The two female characters 
seemed to be not worried. 
• During the production title is spelt out the 
scenes that were shown was in blue and 
black this is done to show there is a mystery 
in the movie. This makes the audience want 
to go on and watch the movie. 
camerawork 
• There are various camera work used in 
‘wallander’. One of them are a zoom at 
the start where the audience is 
introduced to the location. 
• There are a number of extreme close 
up has been taken of the things in the 
car . For example the taxi drivers ID 
card, his face and hands on the steering 
wheel. 
• The extreme close up show that the taxi 
driver is injured but however he is still 
alive as we can see his eye lashes and 
his fingers move . 
• There is a mid-shot taken when the two 
female characters are walking and the 
audience are presented with the scene 
of there back as they walk away.
Questions posed 
• Who are the girls? 
• What are their connections to the 
taxi driver? 
• Did they really kill the taxi driver ? 
• Why did they confess? 
• Why does she not care? 
• Why does she say it doesn’t matter ? 
• Was the taxi driver actually called at 
random ? 
• Are the girls part of a gang ? 
• Why is the drivers ID card displayed 
and left like that ? 
What we learn? 
• The taxi driver has a son. 
• One of the girls name is 
Sonia. 
• The time of the murder is 
5:46pm 
• The murder weapon was a 
knife.
