2. ABSTRACT
The story is about a
journalism student named
Emma. Lately there is more
pollution than usual, so she
decides to investigate and
shediscovers that the
government is polluting the
water with experiments and
that it was not the only
government that was doing
it, thus having to leave part
of humanity to another
planet by a leak in
government laboratories.
3. MARCH 4, 2030
· Droughts, malnutrition and survival. This is how I think I
could describe Earth, a vulgar planet where if you go too
far you will end up dead. Since the incident in 2021,
nothing has been normal again.
I will tell you the story of my life and it is likely that you
will not see anything in the same way as you had before:
My name is Emma and I am 27 years old, in 2021 I was
only 18. I had just started university and was going to
study communication and public relations. You know the
typical thing about a young woman who wants to fulfill
her dreams.
At that time,I lived alone since my parents died in a
tragic traffic accident when I was 15 years old. My
grandmother took care of me until I was 17, when she
passed away from Covid-19. From that moment, I
started my new life alone, in Madrid and in search of a
new life.
I used to watch the news every day. In that year, the
only thing that was talked about was that the
contamination was high. I did not give it much
importance since I thought that nothing would happen
because I always recycled; what I did not imagine is that
those thoughts would lead to our society as we know it
to ruin.
I saw my university classmates joking about the pollution
issue, I even heard that the day before they had been
throwing cans of soda at the ducks in the river, I wanted
to tell them something but I didn't like the idea of making
4. enemies for myself the first day of school year. Through
the corridors the teachers kept talking in a low tone and
worried about whether to close the university or not
because of the pollution issues. In the classrooms the
teachers looked at the phone whenever they could, and
on their screen you could see Greta Thunberg, an
environmental activist.
We were wearing masks, but the streets were starting to
smell strange.
Madrid has always smelled a lot of car smoke so I didn't
see it so strange. What started to worry me is that my
neighbors began to complain that the water was brown
and that some cockroaches appeared.
It was the first days of school year and since I still had
nothing to study I went to the river to see if the dirty
water issue was serious. In general, the water was
brown like soil but the further I went, the darker the water
was, until it turned black. In some areas smoke was
coming out and the few animals that could be left in
floated in the lake with their eyes rolled. The black water
ended up next to some factories with the initials G.D.E. I
thought they were the marks of some product that
contained plastic.
When I went to the factory to ask what it was about, I
saw that there were people in sealed suits
experimenting with plants and animals, I heard they
wanted to try to grow them but ended up burning them
by mistake. They threw all the bad tests into the river,
5. and that explained the contamination of the water and
the dead animals. What shocked me was when I heard
someone called by the name of a well-known politician.
At that moment I knew that the acronym meant
Government of Spain.
I ran home and prepared an article on my computer and
printed it as fast as I could to go on TV to publish it. I
went to the Mediaset studios, a company dedicated to
television communication. As they wouldn't let me in, I
ran away and I looked for a place where they were
recording at that moment and when I found it, I stood in
front of the camera and started reading it as fast as I
could in case they kicked me off the set.
In the end they took me off the plate, but they didn't sue
me. Mind you, they told me not to talk nonsense or next
time they wouldn't be so generous.
The situation did not improve and the citizens and the
government and their experiments did not help to
improve it. In a short time the Covid-19 would not be so
serious. Then I went to university and only went out to
buy. The media ignored me and I no longer knew what
to do, the only thing I could think of was to wait, until the
day came.
They had had a leak in the labs camouflaged in factories,
and not just one. There were more like the one I had
found all over the world so there was a state of alert.
The government of each country had rockets prepared
for half the population of each place where they
6. governed. The rockets would leave for a planet with
characteristics similar to Earth, but I was not one of the
people who would leave because they would not let me
in. This made me lock myself in my house for 42 days.
When I left the house, most of the ground was dry.
I went to a nearby town. I had to hunt the remaining
animals and collect the drinking water that was available.
From that moment all of us who were alive lived like this,
surviving on our part.
And this is how the history of the world ends as you
know it, not because of viruses, not because of crime,
but because of human greed to want more, so recycling
is what I do now every time I see remains from 9 years
ago...
