Amazing Metal Roof Options
1. Metal Roof Materials For Porches
with our Podcast Guest Bill Hippard, Metal Roofing Alliance
Front Porch Ideas and More
2. We interviewed Bill Hippard with the Metal Roofing Alliance and have included
a synopsis of that interview for your review.
“Metal Roofing Alliance is a not for profit
association whose goal is to help the
consumer in the US and Canada
understand the benefits of putting a metal
roof on their home. We help educate
consumer on the benefit of metal roofing.
through national cable TV, print media and
from having conversations with folks to let
people know what's going on in the metal
roofing area.
One of the great things that we've
seen happen in the last 10 years is
that metal roofing has more than
doubled in the United States. It used
to be around 3 to 4 percent and now it
is 8 or 9 percent of the total.” – Bill
Hippard
3. There are two basic
categories of metal roofs.
Vertical seam metal roofs are
often seen in rural and more
industrial areas.
Panels are formed in rows
and the vertical seams of
those panels go from the
gutter up to the roof edge as
shown on the front porch at
left.
They are the most popular
type of roofing in North
America.
4. “In the last few years there have been a number of manufactures that take
that same metal and stamp products out of it to look like clay tile, cedar
shakes, or slate. It is virtually impossible from your yard to tell whether you
have a cedar shake roof or if it is a metal roof that looks like a cedar shake
roof. And the colors you can get are unlimited. I mean there are hundreds
and hundreds of colors available." - Bill Hippard
5. There are hundreds of hundreds
of colors available. I know out in
the rural areas a lot of log cabins
have the beautiful forest green.
A lot of people in the warmer
climates tend to use lighter
colors because of the heat
reflectivity that it provides.
6. A lot of people love the patina that copper turns into. There are actually
paint systems that can create the patina look, that have that green and
copper mixed into the paint, so that in the morning it may look like you
have an all copper roof and in the afternoon as the sun shifts over the
house, it will change to a more green patina roof. - Bill Hippard
7. Energy Savings: You can save anywhere
from 25 to 40 percent on your electric bill in
the summer time because your air
conditioning doesn’t have to work nearly as
much because a metal roof reduces your
attic temperature by 60 to 80 degrees. So
that is a huge benefit.
Environmentally Friendly: Most of the
time you have to strip off the last layer of
shingles when installing a traditional roof.
Metal roofing is very light. It weighs less
than one third of what an asphalt shingle
weighs on a square foot basis.
So you can put your metal roof over the top
of your asphalt shingle roof and that saves
an estimated 22 billion pounds of asphalt
shingles from having to go into landfills
every year.
8. The metal roofs manufactured today are
made of recycled materials. The metal roof
on your house might have been some
body's old car or dishwasher or refrigerator.
And if you ever get tired of your metal roof
it is 100 % recyclable. If you live in an area
where there are wild fires, obviously metal
doesn’t burn.
We have some pretty dramatic photos that
we've seen where a whole neighborhood
has been devastated by a wild fire, except
for two or three homes in the neighborhood
that have metal roofs on because the
houses catch on fire from the roof down.
And when embers land on metal roof they
just sit there and burn out, so you don’t
have that issue. – Bill Hippard
9. Metal roofing is getting
more and more popular.
One of the things that we
are trying to reach is more
urban areas.
There are a lot of people
in rural areas that
understand the benefits of
metal roofing so we are
trying to look at people in
the more historic areas or
cities and towns.
Metal roofing products can
match the products that
are on their roofs today.
So they won't have to
change the appearance of
their building which can be
a real benefit to folks.
