2. The Sense of Touch
The sense of touch is the name given to a network of nerve
endings that reach just about every part of our body. These sensory
nerve endings are located just below the skin.
There are many types of nerve endings, the most common being:
Temperature
Pressure
Pain
5. III. The Pain
Pain is an unpleasant feeling
often caused by intense or
damaging stimuli, such as
stubbing a toe, burning a finger,
putting alcohol on a cut
6. The Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20
square feet. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate
body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.
7. Skin has three layers:
1)
The epidermis, the outermost
layer of skin, provides a
waterproof barrier and creates
our skin tone.
2)
The dermis, beneath the
epidermis, contains tough
connective tissue, hair follicles,
and sweat glands.
3)
The deeper subcutaneous tissue
(hypodermis) is made of fat and
connective tissue.
8. How Touch Works??
The sense of touch
is felt all over the body
through nerve endings in the
skin.
The fingertips,
tongue and lips have the
most nerve endings.
If you touch
something
extremely hot or
painful, your brain
will quickly signal
your arm to move
away.
