- 1950, Alan Turing - Turing test in paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence.” Judge communicates two participants in two different rooms. Room 1 machine, and other real person. Judge ask participant questions to figure which is machine. If the judge picks person less than 50 percent of the time, the machine would be considered “intelligent.” Since Turing’s initial theory, there’s been a steady march to create thinking machines. In the past couple decades, there’s been enormous progress in this field,
- AI made headlines for the first time on 12 May 1997 IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer defeated Gary Kasparov. First time a machine was able to outperform a human at a complex task How? Rules were programmed, computer was told (not thought) to run all possible alternative moves. Brute force, calculation speed. No human can beat chess-computers. So what is next: computer vs computer.
- 20 years later. AlphaZero by Google DeepMind beat world champion chess program, Stockfish 8 Why ? Difference is machine learning. AlphaZero was given basic rules of chess and that is where human input ended. The rest it works out by playing itself over and over with self-reinforced knowledge. Essentially, the computer programs itself. 4 hours to achieved super-human grand-master status. “more human-like approach” in search for moves, processing 80,000 positions per sec vs Stockfish 70m. Lee Sedol. Grand Master of Go vs Google Alphe GoZero. The last claim of human superiority fell with this game. The game is known for its endless combinations More combinations than there are atoms in the universe Brute force no longer works. You can not calculate yourself to victory. Strategies need to be forged, moves must be anticipated, game techniques must adaptable.

- Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has suggested a coffee test, whereby a robot would be challenged to enter your home, find the kitchen and brew a cup of coffee. Requires being able to interpret a totally unknown environment, being able to discover things in a totally unknown place, and being able to make something with unknown equipment in a particular household. We shouldn’t confuse the progress we’re making on these more narrow, specific problem sets to mean, therefore, we have created a generalized system.
- Altogether, the research points out that ChatGPT has around 100 million users just 2.5 months after its launch. To understand how impressive those numbers are, it took Facebook 4.5 years, WhatsApp 3.5 years, Instagram 2.5 years, and Google almost a year to reach 100 million users. In addition, just five days after its launch, ChatGPT had its first one million users, a milestone that took Twitter nearly two years to achieve.
