Using Questioning Skills Effectively
Working with our desire to Give Direction
Use the following to better understand how you can appropriately “Give
Direction” or choose a less directive approach.

Impulse Reaction           Take a moment to understand if you are
                           just reacting on impulse.

Authority from Purpose     Appreciate the purpose in giving direction
                           and the authority that you are choosing to
                           assert.
Judgement                  Consider whether your judgement is useful
                           in progressing the conversation for
                           everyone involved.
Hear                       Listen deeply to what others say to hear
                           what may be hidden behind their answers
                           to you.

Working with our Assumptions
Use the following to better understand your own and others spoken and
unspoken assumptions.

Listen                     Simply listen carefully to others speaking
                           and to your own reactions to them.

Respect                    Accept the validity of another’s point of
                           view, even if you disagree.

Suspend judgement          Consider the possibility that others may be
                           right or have an approach that you had not
                           considered.
Speak up                   Share your views fully and honestly with
                           everyone.
