Journey OF Generosity
Who Are We?
“Generosity Path helps people discover the great joy of
giving…our vision is that Gods people will experience the words
of Jesus – that it is more blessed to give than to receive – and
become known around the world for their joyful and sacrificial
giving”
WHY JOG – PURPOSE ? “HEART”
The JOG speaks to a believer’s heart, reigniting a joy,
thankfulness and desire within to give generously because of
God’s grace bestowed through Jesus Christ
How We Are Funded.
We are fully and privately funded, therefore we are able to
create safe and inspiring environments for people to talk about
money and possessions without any concern that there will be
an appeal for funds.
Session 1
Guidelines
We want this to be a
safe place to learn and
share, so here are a few
ground rules to make
this retreat a positive
experience for
everyone.
Silence mobile
phones.
Refrain from giving
unsolicited advice;
it can feel like
criticism.
Use “I” statements
rather than “you”
statements.
It’s important to
participate—but not
dominate. Leave
room for everyone
to speak.
Commit to
confidentiality.
1 Excel in the grace of giving :
2 Corinthians 8:7 says, “But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in
knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in
this grace of giving.”
2 Listen to and obey the Lord’s prompting for our lives
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
3 Develop a vision for sharing the joy of living generously
Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward
love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.”

QUESTIONS
• What stood out for you?
• “As long as we have something to eat every day we
have something to give to God every day”
• “There are some times that churches have taught
that we need to get blessings from God
• The attitude has been what can we get when we
become part of the church ?
• This story inspires us that God has called us to share
what we have with God, for God’s ministry
• How does it feel to see poor people giving with purpose and joy?
• What statement or phrase inspired you in this video?

THE BLESSING OF GIVING
ACTS 20:25,32 -36
• “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about
preaching the kingdom will ever see my face again”, verse 32, “I
commit you to God and the word of His grace, which can build you
up and give you an inheritance among those who are being set apart
for Him. I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. In
everything I did I showed you that by this kind of work, we must help
the weak; remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself who
said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ And when he had
said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed. They all wept as
they embraced him and kissed him.”
• The healing power of giving is not being released because of our own materialism
and covetousness
• Paul is saying to people he loves and will never see again “ Watch out for greed”
• However, nobody thinks this is their problem !
• Jesus did not have to say “ look out you might be committing adultery but He
does have to say “ look out you might be greedy”
• “ Where your treasure is there is your heart”
• Your money is the perfect way for you to find out what your idols are ….
• You will always find it effortless to spend money on things that are your real
salvation, real significance ,security your real God
• So, how do we break the power of greed so we can release the first ?
Paul highlights the two conflicting powers in all of us
“Blessed”= Healing power of giving Vs Hidden power of greed
LESSONS FROM THE BLESSING OF GIVING
• Pauls presumed last words to people he has won to Christ and discipled and will
probably never see again…
• He is trying to say the main thing that he wants them to remember for the rest of
their lives
• He says 2 things that are tightly connected:
• Firstly – I want you to remember the Gospel; the word of Grace – remember you
are sinners saved by grace alone. Really live according to the Gospel
• Secondly – Believe the Gospel and live radically generous lives
• Are these 2 different subjects ? No. He sees these two things absolutely together
• “If you are people that really do have the spiritual inheritance, you’re going to be
radically generous with your earthly inheritance ”
HOW DO WE BREAK THE POWER OF GREED ?
• GRACE ! = God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense
• Every other treasure but Jesus will enslave you, they will run your life
• But Jesus Christ is the one treasure who Died to purchase you
• Why did Jesus who had the whole universe come ? Why would He come ? What
did He not have ?
• US !
• By coming to earth He lost His glory and going to the cross He lost His father, He
lost everything and was sent essentially to hell on the cross
• That means we were more valuable to Him than the universe, his glory etc
• It means we are His treasure, His ultimate treasure !
• When I see Him making me the ultimate treasure of His life, that melts my heart
and makes Him the ultimate of my life
• The more I see Jesus Christ making me His ultimate treasure, that makes Him the
ultimate treasure of my heart, instead of other idols etc.
• My money and possessions are free to be used to heal the world !

Bible Study & Reflection
In 2 Corinthians 9:5-15, Paul is soliciting funds for poor Jewish saints in
Jerusalem. This was a collection he took up among the Gentile churches (like
the Corinthians) to help Jewish Jerusalem believers who were facing harder-
than-usual economic times as a result of a famine.
Paul did not benefit personally. Several churches joined the effort. The
collection for the poor Jerusalem church was an act of charity. Famine on top
of persistent food shortages, double taxation and overpopulation crippled an
already precarious Jerusalem economy.
Paul had previously made the Corinthians aware of the relief fund, but the
collection effort in Corinth fell by the wayside. Second Corinthians 8-9 is
Paul’s final attempt to get the Corinthians to finish what they had pledged to
do the previous year (8:10-11).
Based on the IVP New Testament Commentary.
Session 2
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your
heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you
need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their
gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase
your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.11 You will be enriched in
every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will
result in thanksgiving to God.
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also
overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have
proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession
of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14
And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God
has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift
REFLECTION & APPLICATION

SCRIPTURE FOR YOUR JOURNEY
• God’s Word is living and active. Spend some time reflecting on the passages below.
Pay close attention to the words or phrases
• where the Holy Spirit nudges you. Select the verse or verses that strike you as
particularly powerful. Where is the God of the universe speaking to you?
1.Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put
their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly
provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be
rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay
up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they
may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 t i m o t h y 6 : 17 – 19
2.But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ
died for us. r o m a n s 5 : 8
3.For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son… j o h n 3 : 16 a
4.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for
your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 c
o r i n t h i a n s 8 : 9
5.The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. P s a l m 2 4 : 1
6.But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the
world, and we can take nothing out of it. 1 t i m o t h y 6 : 6 – 7
7.One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes
to poverty. P r o v e r b s 11 : 2 4
8.So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. R o m a n s 14 : 12
9.A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed
Proverbs 11:25

OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST
Session 3 Celebration of Discipline From The Discipline of Simplicity by Richard Foster
SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD
We have such a focal point in the words of Jesus: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious
about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you
shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds
of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father
feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit
to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field,
how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was
not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is
alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of
little faith?
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or
‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father
knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all
these things shall be yours as well” (Matt. 6:25-33).
OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST
SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD
“first” thing as first
Nothing must come
before the kingdom
of God, what sort of
effort could be
made to pursue the
kingdom of God.
•Should a person get a suitable job in order to exert a
virtuous influence? the answer: no, we must first
seek God’s kingdom.
•Then should we give away all our money to feed the
poor? again the answer: no, we must first seek
God’s kingdom.
•Well, then perhaps we are to go out and preach this
truth to the world that people are to seek first God’s
kingdom?
“Then in a certain sense it is nothing
I shall do. Yes, certainly, in a certain
sense it is nothing, become nothing
before God, learn to keep silent; in
this silence is the beginning, which
is, first to seek God’s Kingdom.”
OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST
SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD
•Involves a life of joyful unconcern for possessions. Worthy as all
other concerns may be, the moment they become the focus of
our efforts they become idolatry
•It has nothing to do with do with abundance of possessions or
their lack
It is an inward
spirit of trust
SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD
characterized by three inner attitudes.
When we are seeking first the
kingdom of God, these three
attitudes will characterise our
lives. Taken together they define
what Jesus means by “do not be
anxious.”
1.If what we have we receive
as a gift,:_To receive what. We
have as a gift from God is the
first inner attitude. We work
but we know that it is not our
work that gives us what we
have. We live by grace even
when it comes to “daily bread.”
We are dependent upon God
for the simplest elements of
life: air, water, sun. What we
have is not the result of our
labour, but of the gracious care
of God
2.If what we have is
to be cared for by
God, :- To know that
it is God’s business,
and not ours, to
care for what we
have is the second
inner attitude of
simplicity. God is
able to protect
what we possess.
We can trust him
3.If what we have is available to
others,:-o have our goods
available to others marks the
third inner attitude of simplicity.
If our goods are not available to
the community when it is clearly
right and good, then they are
stolen goods
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
1.In what ways do I act like a manager (good steward) of what God’s given me, and in
what ways do I act like I’m the owner? If I really acknowledged His ownership, what
would change?
2.As I continue to realise that Jesus gave everything by his death on the cross to
purchase me, what level of sacrifice do I want to give Him? What could I surrender to
Him?
3.What about the thought of sacrificial generosity makes me anxious? Why is that?
What fears does that reveal? If I trust God with my salvation, why do I struggle to trust
Him with (the smaller matter of) providing for me?
4.Is Christ’s undying love my true treasure, or do I actually treasure other things more?
How does my money indicate what my true treasure is? To what extent are things like
my reputation, comfort for my family, and recognition my true treasure? If my ultimate
treasure is in heaven and not in comforts on earth, what could I give up here to store
up there?
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
5.How much money do I need? Will my answer always be “more”?
What would it feel like to set a finish line for myself, and give away
everything beyond that? What things or experiences have I decided are
non-negotiable? The place I live? The car I drive?
6.Why do I believe I am trustworthy to make financial decisions entirely
on my own? Have I found myself biased by greed, comfort, or culture in
making financial decisions? What would be he benefits of sharing my
financial and giving goals with a mature Christian in my community?
Who could that be?
7. How has having money caused me to feel in control of my life? Is this
control an idol for me? What would change if I received Christ’s
invitation to a new level of surrender, trusting him with full control of
my life and future?
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
8.If an outsider were to look at how I use my time, my energy and my
resources, what would they learn about my priorities?
9.How do I keep myself focused on heaven, where I plan to live forever,
(rather than on earth, where I’ll live one-billionth of my existence)? In light of
eternity, am I happy about where I’m placing my focus?
10.When have I regretted giving?
11.Why do I really want to hold onto my wealth? Pride? Power? Prestige?
Selfishness? Insecurity? Fear of becoming sick or old? Proving something to
someone?
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
12.Instead of asking “Why should I give this away?”, I could ask more
consistently, “Why shouldn’t I give this away?”
13.How can I better communicate with and pray with my spouse so we
can walk together down this exciting road of giving, leading each other
but not leaving each other behind?
14.What am I doing to train my children to be generous givers ?
15.Five minutes after I die, what will I wish I would have given away
while I had the chance?
Adapted from reflection questions by Tim Keller and Randy Alcor11.

IDENTIFYING YOUR CURRENT PASSION
• Your passions are the areas in which you live out your purpose. This begins
with you identifying people or causes that are on your heart and how you
can help.
• You may find that your passions change over time depending on your life
phase or due to the needs around you
• Who I help
• How they benefit
• Look at each of the four groups . Circle the phrase that stands out most
from each group and then transfer to the empty box at the bottom. If there
is another phrase not listed you can add it under ‘other’. Then refine the
options down to onemerging current passion.

  • 2. Who Are We? “Generosity Path helps people discover the great joy of giving…our vision is that Gods people will experience the words of Jesus – that it is more blessed to give than to receive – and become known around the world for their joyful and sacrificial giving” WHY JOG – PURPOSE ? “HEART” The JOG speaks to a believer’s heart, reigniting a joy, thankfulness and desire within to give generously because of God’s grace bestowed through Jesus Christ How We Are Funded. We are fully and privately funded, therefore we are able to create safe and inspiring environments for people to talk about money and possessions without any concern that there will be an appeal for funds. Session 1
  • 3. Guidelines We want this to be a safe place to learn and share, so here are a few ground rules to make this retreat a positive experience for everyone. Silence mobile phones. Refrain from giving unsolicited advice; it can feel like criticism. Use “I” statements rather than “you” statements. It’s important to participate—but not dominate. Leave room for everyone to speak. Commit to confidentiality.
  • 4. 1 Excel in the grace of giving : 2 Corinthians 8:7 says, “But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Listen to and obey the Lord’s prompting for our lives Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” 3 Develop a vision for sharing the joy of living generously Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” .
  • 5. What is you Hope For This Experience? 5 minutes
  • 6. HANDFUL OF RICE ENGLISH
  • 7. QUESTIONS • What stood out for you? • “As long as we have something to eat every day we have something to give to God every day” • “There are some times that churches have taught that we need to get blessings from God • The attitude has been what can we get when we become part of the church ? • This story inspires us that God has called us to share what we have with God, for God’s ministry • How does it feel to see poor people giving with purpose and joy? • What statement or phrase inspired you in this video?
  • 10. THE BLESSING OF GIVING ACTS 20:25,32 -36 • “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see my face again”, verse 32, “I commit you to God and the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among those who are being set apart for Him. I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. In everything I did I showed you that by this kind of work, we must help the weak; remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself who said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ And when he had said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed. They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him.”
  • 11. • The healing power of giving is not being released because of our own materialism and covetousness • Paul is saying to people he loves and will never see again “ Watch out for greed” • However, nobody thinks this is their problem ! • Jesus did not have to say “ look out you might be committing adultery but He does have to say “ look out you might be greedy” • “ Where your treasure is there is your heart” • Your money is the perfect way for you to find out what your idols are …. • You will always find it effortless to spend money on things that are your real salvation, real significance ,security your real God • So, how do we break the power of greed so we can release the first ? Paul highlights the two conflicting powers in all of us “Blessed”= Healing power of giving Vs Hidden power of greed
  • 12. LESSONS FROM THE BLESSING OF GIVING • Pauls presumed last words to people he has won to Christ and discipled and will probably never see again… • He is trying to say the main thing that he wants them to remember for the rest of their lives • He says 2 things that are tightly connected: • Firstly – I want you to remember the Gospel; the word of Grace – remember you are sinners saved by grace alone. Really live according to the Gospel • Secondly – Believe the Gospel and live radically generous lives • Are these 2 different subjects ? No. He sees these two things absolutely together • “If you are people that really do have the spiritual inheritance, you’re going to be radically generous with your earthly inheritance ”
  • 13. HOW DO WE BREAK THE POWER OF GREED ? • GRACE ! = God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense • Every other treasure but Jesus will enslave you, they will run your life • But Jesus Christ is the one treasure who Died to purchase you • Why did Jesus who had the whole universe come ? Why would He come ? What did He not have ? • US ! • By coming to earth He lost His glory and going to the cross He lost His father, He lost everything and was sent essentially to hell on the cross • That means we were more valuable to Him than the universe, his glory etc • It means we are His treasure, His ultimate treasure ! • When I see Him making me the ultimate treasure of His life, that melts my heart and makes Him the ultimate of my life • The more I see Jesus Christ making me His ultimate treasure, that makes Him the ultimate treasure of my heart, instead of other idols etc. • My money and possessions are free to be used to heal the world !
  • 14. BREAK 15 MINS - • SESSION 2
  • 15. Bible Study & Reflection In 2 Corinthians 9:5-15, Paul is soliciting funds for poor Jewish saints in Jerusalem. This was a collection he took up among the Gentile churches (like the Corinthians) to help Jewish Jerusalem believers who were facing harder- than-usual economic times as a result of a famine. Paul did not benefit personally. Several churches joined the effort. The collection for the poor Jerusalem church was an act of charity. Famine on top of persistent food shortages, double taxation and overpopulation crippled an already precarious Jerusalem economy. Paul had previously made the Corinthians aware of the relief fund, but the collection effort in Corinth fell by the wayside. Second Corinthians 8-9 is Paul’s final attempt to get the Corinthians to finish what they had pledged to do the previous year (8:10-11). Based on the IVP New Testament Commentary. Session 2
  • 16. 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift
  • 17. REFLECTION & APPLICATION • What is God telling me ? • What area in my life needs repentance ? • What words in this passage encourage & strengthen me ? • What is my response ? • Journal any thoughts you may have and conclude with prayer
  • 20. SESSION 3 SCRIPTURE FOR YOUR JOURNEY • God’s Word is living and active. Spend some time reflecting on the passages below. Pay close attention to the words or phrases • where the Holy Spirit nudges you. Select the verse or verses that strike you as particularly powerful. Where is the God of the universe speaking to you?
  • 21. 1.Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 t i m o t h y 6 : 17 – 19 2.But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. r o m a n s 5 : 8 3.For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son… j o h n 3 : 16 a 4.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 c o r i n t h i a n s 8 : 9
  • 22. 5.The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. P s a l m 2 4 : 1 6.But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 1 t i m o t h y 6 : 6 – 7 7.One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. P r o v e r b s 11 : 2 4 8.So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. R o m a n s 14 : 12 9.A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed Proverbs 11:25 All references from the New International Version.
  • 23. OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST Session 3 Celebration of Discipline From The Discipline of Simplicity by Richard Foster SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD We have such a focal point in the words of Jesus: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well” (Matt. 6:25-33).
  • 24. OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD “first” thing as first Nothing must come before the kingdom of God, what sort of effort could be made to pursue the kingdom of God. •Should a person get a suitable job in order to exert a virtuous influence? the answer: no, we must first seek God’s kingdom. •Then should we give away all our money to feed the poor? again the answer: no, we must first seek God’s kingdom. •Well, then perhaps we are to go out and preach this truth to the world that people are to seek first God’s kingdom? “Then in a certain sense it is nothing I shall do. Yes, certainly, in a certain sense it is nothing, become nothing before God, learn to keep silent; in this silence is the beginning, which is, first to seek God’s Kingdom.”
  • 25. OR SESSION 3 – SEEKING THE KINGDOM FIRST SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD •Involves a life of joyful unconcern for possessions. Worthy as all other concerns may be, the moment they become the focus of our efforts they become idolatry •It has nothing to do with do with abundance of possessions or their lack It is an inward spirit of trust
  • 26. SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD characterized by three inner attitudes. When we are seeking first the kingdom of God, these three attitudes will characterise our lives. Taken together they define what Jesus means by “do not be anxious.” 1.If what we have we receive as a gift,:_To receive what. We have as a gift from God is the first inner attitude. We work but we know that it is not our work that gives us what we have. We live by grace even when it comes to “daily bread.” We are dependent upon God for the simplest elements of life: air, water, sun. What we have is not the result of our labour, but of the gracious care of God 2.If what we have is to be cared for by God, :- To know that it is God’s business, and not ours, to care for what we have is the second inner attitude of simplicity. God is able to protect what we possess. We can trust him 3.If what we have is available to others,:-o have our goods available to others marks the third inner attitude of simplicity. If our goods are not available to the community when it is clearly right and good, then they are stolen goods
  • 27. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION 1.In what ways do I act like a manager (good steward) of what God’s given me, and in what ways do I act like I’m the owner? If I really acknowledged His ownership, what would change? 2.As I continue to realise that Jesus gave everything by his death on the cross to purchase me, what level of sacrifice do I want to give Him? What could I surrender to Him? 3.What about the thought of sacrificial generosity makes me anxious? Why is that? What fears does that reveal? If I trust God with my salvation, why do I struggle to trust Him with (the smaller matter of) providing for me? 4.Is Christ’s undying love my true treasure, or do I actually treasure other things more? How does my money indicate what my true treasure is? To what extent are things like my reputation, comfort for my family, and recognition my true treasure? If my ultimate treasure is in heaven and not in comforts on earth, what could I give up here to store up there?
  • 28. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION 5.How much money do I need? Will my answer always be “more”? What would it feel like to set a finish line for myself, and give away everything beyond that? What things or experiences have I decided are non-negotiable? The place I live? The car I drive? 6.Why do I believe I am trustworthy to make financial decisions entirely on my own? Have I found myself biased by greed, comfort, or culture in making financial decisions? What would be he benefits of sharing my financial and giving goals with a mature Christian in my community? Who could that be? 7. How has having money caused me to feel in control of my life? Is this control an idol for me? What would change if I received Christ’s invitation to a new level of surrender, trusting him with full control of my life and future?
  • 29. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION 8.If an outsider were to look at how I use my time, my energy and my resources, what would they learn about my priorities? 9.How do I keep myself focused on heaven, where I plan to live forever, (rather than on earth, where I’ll live one-billionth of my existence)? In light of eternity, am I happy about where I’m placing my focus? 10.When have I regretted giving? 11.Why do I really want to hold onto my wealth? Pride? Power? Prestige? Selfishness? Insecurity? Fear of becoming sick or old? Proving something to someone?
  • 30. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION 12.Instead of asking “Why should I give this away?”, I could ask more consistently, “Why shouldn’t I give this away?” 13.How can I better communicate with and pray with my spouse so we can walk together down this exciting road of giving, leading each other but not leaving each other behind? 14.What am I doing to train my children to be generous givers ? 15.Five minutes after I die, what will I wish I would have given away while I had the chance? Adapted from reflection questions by Tim Keller and Randy Alcor11.
