1. What is feminism?
How have your ideas about the goals of feminist movements changed since beginning this class? You could share what stereotypes of feminism you have heard in the past and/or how you have participated in social activism. Be sure to connect your discussion to the textbook’s introduction and /or Chapter 1.
2. All students should read Reading 4 “Under Western Eyes” by Chandra Mohany. What is the thesis statement of the reading? Share at least one example of how Mohanty supports this thesis. She might use statistics, theory, example, etc.
Check out these two links for information and examples of thesis statements:

(Links to an external site.)

(Links to an external site.)
Not only will identifying thesis statements in your readings enhance your understanding and comprehension of the material, it will help prepare you to write your own papers in this and other classes.
3. With the advent of globalization, information technology and rise of neo-liberal world economy, what do you think are some of the challenges and possibilities for transnational feminist solidarity that are capable of transcending geographical boundaries, structural inequalities, and social differences? Should ‘we’ or should ‘we’ not strive for a transnational solidarity at all in the first place? Give some examples to support your response.
Directions:
For your initial post due Friday by 11:59 pm, respond to and expand on the questions above. Give examples from the readings and your own experiences. You will not see classmates' posts until you have submitted your initial post.
Then, respond to two classmates' posts by Sunday at 11:59 pm. Ask each other questions. Start to dig deeper into the ideas raised.
Finally, post a final thought in your own thread or a classmate's thread by Sunday at 11:59pm that can act like a conclusion for your thinking about these ideas this week. What did you learn from each other? After reading what your classmates have done, what else might you like to know more about this term?
I will also be reading and posting during the week but like to let students get the conversation going.
Please note that you will not see your classmates' posts until you post an initial response to the prompts.
The discussions are where we build community! It is also a place to practice using the language of the discipline and work through ideas you might want to explore for your formal assignments.
How the Discussion Board Will Be Graded is below. All points from discussions will count toward a total of 30% of your final grade.
You will be graded on a scale of 0-10, and the points will be divided as follows:
STEP 1.
Your initial post is worth 5 points and grade.

from discussions will count toward a total of 30% of your final
grade.
You will be graded on a scale of 0-10, and the points will be
divided as follows:
STEP 1.
Your initial post is worth 5 points and graded for quality and
meeting the requirements (It should be a good size paragraph in
length, about 7-9 sentences). Start a new thread in this
Discussion Forum. The 5 points will be earned as follows:
5 pts: Responses to the question prompts. Clear writing
3. and examples.
Points will be deducted if the initial post is not on the
DB by the deadline.
STEPS 2 and 3.
Each of the replies is worth 2 points (4 pts total). Read
through your classmates' posts and choose 2 to respond
to. Each reply will be scored as follows:
1 pt: for replying to a classmates' discussion prompt in
a substantive way. (in other words: "Yes" or "I agree" is
insufficient. Keep going! Why do you agree? What can you
add?) This should take at least 2 full sentences.
1 pt: Your response should enhance your classmates'
analysis of the definitions and examples. Go further; address
another aspect. If your reply is the first reply, ask another
question. If its the second reply, respond to the original posting
as well as the first reply.
Points will be deducted if the replies are not on the DB
by the deadline.
STEP 4.
Your final response about your article is worth 1 point.
Points will be deducted if the Final post is not on the
DB by the deadline.
NOTE: If you don’t post anything at all or post after the final
deadline, you earn no points.
Be respectful and remember to follow the Netiquette and
guidelines for discussions.
