Second French Colonial Empire The second colonial empire began in 1830 when France took over Algeria In 1861 France took over South Vietnam and in 1863 Cambodia In 1849 France owned Shanghai which lasted till 1946 In 1881 France decided to go to North Africa and take over Tunisia, gradually France ended up taking over almost all of Africa
3. In 1885 France took over central and North Vietnam which gave them control which then created Indochina In 1911 France took over the islands in the pacific that make up French Polynesia The last of France’s colonies was after WW I when they took control of Syria and Lebanon
