THE WARM MIX PRODUCT RANGE
FOR SUSTAINABLE ROADS
With ecological and energy requirements becoming ever more stringent, the various roadworks
industry stakeholders are increasingly focusing on lowering asphalt mix production and laying
temperatures.
With a pioneering product, launched in 2003, Eurovia has become a leader in the field, with
several millions of tonnes laid to date. Today, all of Eurovia’s so-called warm processes are
gathered in a range named Tempera®.

Reducing mixing temperature is equivalent to reducing
the quantity of fuel needed to heat the aggregates in
the mix plant by 20%. Asphalt mixes in the Tempera®
range also exhibit very substantial reductions in
emissions of CO, CO2, NOx and SOx generated by fossil
fuel combustion.
technologies, applied to both products and
processes (anhydrous additives or foaming),
that significantly reduce asphalt mix production
and laying temperatures. In this product range,
surfacings retain the same characteristics as
conventional hot mix solutions, while production
temperatures are reduced, depending on the
mixing plant, aggregate petrography and type
of mix. For example, with Evotherm® MA3, the
reduction in temperature can reach 30°C, when it
is 50°C (122°F) with Evotherm® DAT5.
By eliminating fumes and odours, these new mixes
ensure greater comfort for application teams and
the surrounding community during laying.
Other than its temperature lowering feature the
Evotherm® DAT5 and MA3 additives are bonding
agents wich give the mixes similar properties than
traditional hot coated aggregates.

RESULTS
Compelling results observed in the laboratory
and confirmed on the worksite have validated the
performance of the products and processes in the
Tempera® range. A wide variety of new asphalt mixes
and mixes incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement
are feasible. However, as for any hot asphalt mix, a
preliminary laboratory study remains indispensable.
To date, the various types of aggregate tested have
all proved compatible with the Eurovia range of
processes.
ongoing
innovation
In parallel, laboratory work continues and new
additives are currently being tested. The Eurovia
research centre in Mérignac (France) is also studying
the rheology and modelling the temperature behaviour
of the Tempera® range of asphalt mixes.
4. The use of warm mix technologies is
already growing at a fast pace and will
be further expanding in future, driven
by rising energy costs and changes
in legislation aimed at protecting the
environment.
The high-performance technologies
of the Tempera® range are suitable for
all types of pavements and constitute
ecological road design solutions.
