- 4. Reasons for the increase of international sourcing
Increased international sourcing is driven from three
directions:
• Requirements of retailers (low cost sources)
• Evolving structure of major suppliers (brand rationalisation,
low cost)
• Socio-political (European trade barriers/€, WTO) & socio-
technical change (reduced transaction costs, linking CAD &
CAM, internet B2B)

- 5. Sourcing trends
• The impact of the removal of the World Trade
Organisation’s (WTO) Agreement on Textiles and Clothing
(ATC) on 1st January 2005 has been the single biggest issue
in global fashion sourcing to affect international retailers
for many years, increasing competition amongst clothing
and textiles suppliers worldwide
• The emergence of fast fashion has led European retailers
wishing to take advantage of short lead times to
manufacture closer to home than the Far East (e.g.
Turkey, Morocco)
