Acquisition of vocabulary
Words are learnt incidentally after repeated exposure to
the language (SCHMITT, 2000: 121).
In-depth understanding of a word through the context in
which it appears increases implicit learning (MACARO,
2005: 86).
“Guessing a new word’s meaning from context is a key
vocabulary learning skill…”(SCHMITT; 2000: 153).
The context clarifies the meaning, making it easier to
associate the word to its referent. The multiple exposure
to a word in different contexts is of utmost importance
for students to learn it, after understanding its meaning
(SCHMITT, 2000).
