Editor's Notes

  1. In nursing, the term workplace diversity is used to indicate group that is composed of employees with varying characteristics that include gender, race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation among other factors. Workplace diversity is very important in nursing as it will help improve the healthcare outcomes. Organisations that lack diversity in healthcare are usually bound to experience poor health and higher mortality rates among the communities that they service (Paric et al..2021). This is because there are patients who will not be comfortable when they are attended to by healthcare provider who do not share their race, ethnicity, religion or language. Nursing diversity becomes important in strengthening the ccording to the National Center for Health Statistics, a lack of diversity in the healthcare workforce is one factor that has contributed to poorer health and higher mortality rates among minority groups. Some patients feel more comfortable when their healthcare providers share their ethnicity, race, and language (Paric et al..2021). Improving nursing diversity strengthens the trust between patients and nurses, which can lead to patients more strongly adhering to nurses’ recommendations.
  2. As a hospital, Lakeland strives to provide essential healthcare services to the vulnerable communities of the Haitian people. As a result, we also hear the responsibility for meeting the needs of the population that we serve. This diversity plan is essential to ensue that at all times the disadvantaged, marginalized and disenfranchised people within the community have been treated with utmost respect. The following plan proposes important policies with respect to hiring staff, internal training, public communication and meet the needs of the local Haitian people, since they are our primary patients.
  3. In accordance with the content of your email, the fundamental objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that effectively incorporates Haitian cultural values, beliefs, and healthcare practices. This assertion is consistent with the findings of Young & Guo, (2020), who underscore the importance of cultural competency within the healthcare context. Our goal for this project will ensure that we: Provide essential healthcare services to Lakeland community, we also intent to improve communication between Lakeland and community, develop a comprehensive treatment plan for the Haitian community, ensure equality in hiring of staff, build community confidence in Lakeland through outreach and recover patient flow to the hospital.
  4. Based on our project goals, the team will be composed of a monitoring and evaluation expert (M&E), trainers, laison persons and care providers. The M&E experts are very important as they will help the management translated raw data to useful information. They will help the hospital understand trends within the community in regard to our relationship with the community, patient satisfaction, areas of complaints and levels of diversity in regard to hiring and recruitment of staff. Secondly we shall have trainers, who will help the staff understand the hospital mandate as well as ensuring inclusion of cultural needs of the community as we perform our work. Trainers will also make staff from outside the community understand the culture of Haitian people and how we are able to service them better. Through training our administrators will be able to contribute highly to change. That we shall have the liason person, who will be a the main link between the Haitian community and the hospital. They will ensure that peop,e in the community embrace the course our work and how their participation will ensure we are able to do our work well. We shall also have the care providers in the team. This include patient families, relatives, friends and community volunteers. The care providers are very vital as they will make people from the community feel appreciated, feel heard, loved and safe. Liason person will also be vital in incorporate culture and contemporary medicine for better health outcomes. Careproviders are very instrumental in making healthcare providers have an intimate understanding of the challenges facing the community that Lakeland services.
  5. The role of the nurses is very vital in ensuring diversity of care specifically making a strong commitment to cultural competency. The nurses will be expected to be a good communicator by focusing on patient and staff members' awareness of and acceptance of various cultural origins. Effective communication is essential for bridging any possible gaps and calls for concise language and cultural awareness. By embracing diversity, the nurse should understand non-verbal clues and engaging in active listening. In order to navigate a variety of ideas and behaviors, strategic problem-solving is essential (Young & Guo,2020). The capacity of the nurse leader to assess circumstances, recognize possible cultural issues, and come up with solutions is crucial. A sensitive, empathic approach anchored on cultural awareness is also crucial. Trust is built through developing sincere relationships with patients and taking into account their cultural viewpoints (Paric et al..2021). Finally, it's critical to recognize each team member's abilities in order to build a collaborative atmosphere. These characteristics in a nurse leader may promote
  6. Nursing leadership practices pertaining to diversity include the comprehension of community demographic requirements and the development of inter-departmental training initiatives focused on various facets of cultural proficiency. According to Lekas et al. (2020), healthcare training programs prioritize the provision of safe and individualized treatment in accordance with community health standards by using culturally sensitive intervention models. The program will further raise awareness among medical care personnel about the alignment of their research and development activities with government and community legislation norms. Paric et al. (2021) assert that transformational nursing leadership programs facilitate the active participation of healthcare personnel from many disciplines, enabling them to express their perspectives on the project (Young & Guo,2020). This inclusive approach ensures the development of a program that is suitable for all workers (Kaihlanen et al., 2019).
  7. A diverse workforce will benefit the Lakeside hospital in so many way. First there will be reduced complaints lodged to the hospital administration by patients who may feel prejudiced against for lack of communication. On the other hand this will also be beneficial to the hospital as by hiring staff from the Haitian community, communication and understanding of the patient care needs will be made easy(Young & Guo,2020). The hospital will also nurses who care interpret patient care needs since they understand the Haitian culture. There will also be increased collaboration between the community and the hospital through working together to come up with medical approaches that meet community needs. There will be reduced levels of litigation brought about by negligence, especially when the nurse ignores or does not understand the cultural needs of the patient from the community. With diversity, more patients from the community will feel comfortable being treated at lakeside thus increasing patient flow, there will also be increased collaboration as diversity ensures understanding of community needs, customs and culture.
  8. To conclude, I would like to appreciate that diversity is needed at the Lakeside hospital as it will ensure better treatment and patient outcomes in various aspects. As stated above, diversity is about (Kaihlanen et al., 2019); equality in hiring staff to include those from the community, diversity will improve communication, there will be incorporation of cultural norms, increased patient flow and finally diversity will ensure the inclusion of traditional and complementary medicine to improve treatment outcomes (Paric et al..2021).
